I pulled my 20' Chaparral with a 4.0 cherokee just fine, although I now have a v-8 grand cherokee and it pulls way better.

Re: 94 Cherokee towing capacity...

I did a little googling and capacities for that car seem to range from 3500 to 5,000 lbs depending on motor, tranny and axle ratio.

Find the real numbers for your truck- a Jeep dealer might be able to help you based on the VIN. Please don't engage in wishful thinking- it's dangerous.

What's the weight of your Jeep with passengers, fuel and stuff aboard?
What's the weight of your boat and trailer with fuel and stuff in the boat? Tongue weight?
What's the tow capacity of your Jeep?
What's the GVWR of your Jeep?

Good luck.

Re: 94 Cherokee towing capacity...

Maybe I asked the question incorrectly...I'd like to hear from owners of the same model , 94 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0..with 4 speed automatic and get some informed feedback...I am an ASE certified mechanic......I can re-sell this one if information about it makes it not a good tow vehicle for my needs...my boat weighs in at 1740 lbs with standard engine , as it is equipped,...lets lean on the safe side , and say another 2,000 pounds , trailer , fuel and some line and PFD's and maybe a tube....I really don't like fat girls , so lets say max female weight ...around 115 lbs or less ( MY capacity plate).......one if I am lucky , two.... who cares about the trailer !....lol :D

We own a 99 cherokee, same engine and tranny. That Jeep will have no problems towing a 2,000lb boat assuming you know your limitations. Just watch the stopping distance and dont be in a hurry to get where youre going. Always tow in 3rd, not D.

Re: 94 Cherokee towing capacity...

I'm a bit of a Jeep nut myself (see sig) and from what I know about the XJ Cherokee is that the engine (4.0 six) and auto trans (AW-4) are both strong and up to the task...but the rear springs on them are often sagged bad and you might want to see how much it sags from the tongue weight and then maybe put a heavy duty set on...or even use a set of Air Lift air bags...I have em in my 98 ZJ Grand Cherokee and they work well. The other issue is the brakes on the XJ Cherokee are marginal for towing...so make sure they are in good shape...and that trailer needs brakes that work...finally the cooling systems were weak on the older ones as well and you might need to go through it and replace the rad and WP if they are original...but for short distances and lower speeds they can tow that load pretty well. I towed my 88 FW (about 4Klbs) for years with a 4.0 Grand and it did OK but you could feel the load back there. Now my 07 WK Grand with the 5.7 Hemi tows great...the power is like a muscle car and it has way better brakes than the older Jeeps had. And the code letters I used....in case you were wondering...Jeep's internal codes for each model

XJ=Cherokee 84-01
ZJ= Grand Cherokee 93-98
WJ= Grand Cherokee 99-04
WK= Grand Cherokee 05-10

PS the ZJ is the last Jeep actually designed by American Motors and they didn't have the cash to put it into production (was supposed to replace the XJ). Chrysler bought AMC in 87 and the design for the ZJ was mostly done...they waited a few years and put it out in 92 as a 93 model...of all of them I kind of like it the best because it still had the live axle up front with the manually shifted 4x4 and a choice of good engines 6 and V-8...still looks good after all these years. The XJ is also a classic in that same way...first unibody Jeep...

To be on the safe side, have the whole thing weighed (Jeep separate from trailer)... ;)

Is the GVWR and tow capacity not on the inside of the door?

Re: 94 Cherokee towing capacity...

I sold my 94 Cherokee 4WD, 4.0L, 4 speed auto a few months ago. Factory ratings with the tow package (auxiliary trans cooler, full size spare, 3.73 rear end) were 3500 lbs with a standard hitch, 5000 lbs with a weight-distributing hitch.

Do a little research, you'll find that Cherokee's have HORRIBLE rear brakes. Mine lived up to their reputation. They aren't bad stopping just the car, but any weight on the rear overloads them and it'll take you much further to stop than you'd like. I towed my 1997 Bayliner 1850 with mine for 7 years, but I only tow a couple of miles on residential roads to the launch. Try a few panic stops on an empty road with your trailer BEFORE you go out in traffic so you'll know what kind of stopping distance you'll need. People do all kinds of shenanigans with the rear proportioning valve, switching to rear disks, etc, trying to get them to stop.

And believe it or not AMC designed the 4.7L and 3.7L used in Jeeps currently. :)

I've had a jeep or ten..... 2k with all brakes
working... no prob.... 5k..... possible but not anything I would do... My 94 cherokee did real well with up to about 2500... anything bigger than that and I left it home and used a truck

Re: 94 Cherokee towing capacity...

Used my '96 4.0 Jeep Cherokee to pull my appox. 1,200 pound boat and accompanying stuff without issue for years.

Actually used it to move a 10,000 lb 37 foot travel trailer once as well. Thankfully only had to go about 500 yards through a campground.....turning was tricky on the gravel road with no weight on the front tires though!

I believe it-not. AMC was long gone by the time these motors were conceived. They were designed to replace AMC motors, but are Chrysler designs. Take a look here.
