I have a 1994 90 horse johnson that died on me on the lake last week. It sounded like it was missing real bad and was really viberating before I shut her down. I took it to the mechanic and he checked the compression and all the cylinders are good. He thinks it may be a bad lower main bearing. He is going to tear it down in a day or so and find out for sure.
The questions:

-What might cause this to happen?
-Is there anything else that I should look at replacing while the engine is torn apart?
-Is this a sign of a motor that is on its last legs?
-Any other words of wisdom (encouraging or not) that you may have to share??

Thanks

if, in fact, it is a lower main bearing, inadequate lubrication or water getting to the bearing would be the likely reasons for failure. Bearings don't commonly fail in most outboards, at least not without something else failing first. I had a motor where an internal exhaust cover bolt failed and caused the lower main bearing to seize due to water getting to it.

You dont have to tear the motor apart to see/remove/replace the lower main bearing. Just pull the powerhead and the lower cap and bearing is removable.

Good luck!

How does the lower main bearing get lubrication. Is it all enclosed or do you have to lubricate it somehow?
