looking for Don S caught some usefull info from Searay steves post on idle. My so called manual is a 1995-1997 Clymers stern drive shop manual B744 (NO REVISION) which the local Merc dealer assured me would help me solve all my problems and is the manual they swear to!!!!!!.But anyway after setting base timming @ 1 degree BTDC with the rpm @ 2,600 rpm the advance should be 25 to 29 degrees accoring to this manual. this link info you sent me is advance @23degrees @2800 rpm has never occurred but has been substatially higher like off the timming advance grid around the harmonic balancer but the engine runs ok to some extent but I definetly do not want to go through the dissapointment this comming summer as I did last summer. if you beleive I have missed something please jump on this post.

Fug
i am a 1995 3.0LX owner and i wasted money on that manual also it does not even show the correct sterndrive for bellows repiar it tells you how to do a pre 1990 GEN1 instead of a GEN2

in general it is full of mistakes the merc manuals have much better info and a lot less mistakes

with the timeing you are missing something or have a bad part if it advanced that far the motor would be very unhappy and have a wicked pre ingition ping

tommays

Unfortunitaly, I can't physically see your engine or the problem (if you actually have one) of how the advance is working or not working.
Did you heed this caution in the service bulletin.
Advance%20curve%20warning.jpg
After you set the timing while the distributor is in base timing mode, you need to remove the jumper and take it back out of base timing before you check the advance timing. A Mercruiser manual explains this in detail.
At idle, you should have around 12° to 14° showing at the timing mark, it will move around a lot, so that is why you have to put it in base timing mode to set it.
Then by the time the rpm gets to 2800 (or there abouts) the timing should show in the 22° to 26° range.
PS: I use Clymers manuals for kindling so as I can start the fire place. And if that is what your Merc dealer recommends, then you better find another dealer.

Want to order a Mercruiser Manual Click Here

Don S you the man! I have found alot of questionable procedures in the clymers but it helped me more than most people I spoke with besides the people on this forum. is there anyway you can send me the proper timing procedure via a link on a post?. I'm currently without work and $ is tight.

Re: 95 3.0 lx timming issue

Don S I want to express my gratitude for your assistance. but the procedure in my clymers manual? is identical. But once again my advance @ 2600 rpm is well over 27degrees what are the odds of my module being bad again? or possibly me not connecting the shift interpretor switch before check total advance Iknow for a fact that if my advance is that high I should have pre ignition out the ying yang but I don't. Do you think I should look further into something like my timing chain? Remember I'm a novice but learning rapidly but not without credit to people like yourself. Hopefully by the time sping hits me and my family can be enjoying our 175 five series Sea Ray on the South East end of the Ohio River and North Eastern Ohios Belin Lake.

After you disconnect the jumper wire, what is the timing at idle, in degrees.
Also what is it at 2600 rpm in degrees.
Where did you get the module, was it a Mercruiser part? If so, what was the part number?
One other thing, what is the Serial number of your engine.

Re: 95 3.0 lx timming issue

timing @ idle was around 18 degrees and @ 2600rpm around 30 degrees. I have a Napa dealer that has access to all marine parts for Merc @ this point I am unable to find the invoice for the module to give the correct part# and it is not a Merc part but GM. The engine serial # is 0F553706 I believe the 0 is supposed to have a slash through it.The module is the exact same module GM manufactures for Merc before they put it in thier box? according to GM tech support.

I would try the real Merc part if it was me.
