But for later what will i need to do to swap out to a duo or bravo 3?

Everything but the engine itself.

Well here's to hoping that it lasts a long time! :D

Any suggestions on how to operate a sterndrive to keep life in it? Maintenance.

I'll be going to Royal Purple gear oil and i'll check/replace the impeller....

"While most people will admit that the OMC stringers were poorly engineered, the OMC Cobra had some pretty innovative features. The new modern factory and the Cobra engineering attracted the attention of Volvo and in 1993 OMC and Volvo entered into a joint venture and began producing a hybrid sterndrive with the OMC Cobra transom plate assembly and the excellent Volvo cone clutch outdrive. Sold as the Cobra by OMC and the SX Drive by Volvo, this drive had the best of both manufacturers. Because the new hybrid sterndrive used the same transom plate as the Cobra, Volvo now had a drive that would bolt into the same size transom cutout hole as the Mercruiser.

The new Cobra/Volvo hybrid sterndrive shared only the transom assembly with the 1986-1992 OMC Cobra. Everything behind the transom plate bell housing was Volvo engineering. Realistically, with the introduction of this sterndrive in 1993, we can say that the OMC sterndrive engineers were put out of business when the last of the OMC designed sterndrives finished production in 1992. On December 23rd 1998, Volvo purchased the Lexington, Tennessee factory and all of the production rights to the OMC sterndrives, thus officially ending the OMC sterndrive business."

This is fun learning about all this late model OMC stuff..

Yeah, they were "breathless" with excitement about the "New" Cobra.

Your drive is a REAL "DODO Bird" in that they didn't make very many of them at all and many of the parts are simply not available.

So "baby" it!!!

If you do want to swap it to something else, you will need to remove everything. (you could use your long-block engine though....unless it's got an (OMC) Spit-Fire ignition on it.....

If it runs, run it.

If it quits from an ignition problem...., remove all of it and get either a Thunderbolt V distributor/ ignition system or a (Marine type) MSD or other Marine distributor. (there's no parts available for the Spit Fire systems anymore)

You should check your raw water pump impeller though. If there's any evidence of failure, you'll need to find all the pieces of the old impeller before you trrun it. (They usually end up in the power steering oil cooler)

Good luck!

It's got to be the spit fire set up. If it fails i'll run a MSD.

When the unit fails i guess i'll need everything from the transom plate back.

NO WORRIES MATE!

6,000 think its still a deal. I found a windshield for it too! 500$
