This beast shifted fine until I changed the water-pump. Once I got it back together, I have no reverse and it staying in gear in Neutral. I can see the shift rod moving when I look at it from the side and seems to be trying to shift.

Definitely installation problem of water pump. It has to be in the forward position when reinstalling or is it neutral when removed maybe it's......that's probably why my buddy changes my water pump.

I bet someone turned the shift rod, thought "Hey this thing is loose", and then proceeded to tighten it all the way down.....:facepalm::facepalm:

Step # 1 is to remove the lower unit.-----Then with the lower unit in nuetral you measure from the mating surface to the center of the hole in the shift rod.---Write down that measurement and post it here,

One quick question before i remove, Do I remove the lower unit with the throttle all the way in Forward or put in in neutral to remove?

Model # is ??--------The lower unit itself DOES NOT care what gear it is in.------You may need to shift this thing to disconnect the shift rod.

As long as you can access the shift bolt/pin, what gear it's in doesn't matter.

E90SLEDR Evinrude 1996 - Makes me mad that I watched a video before taking it off the first time and it said it has to be shifted all the way forward to remove. grrrrrr

It may need to be shifted to release the shift pin.---Clearance needed to push the lever to port side etc etc.---Other than that it does not matter to the gears.

Ok I got the lower unit off. I removed the lower cowling to get at the pin easier, It was removed in Neutral BUT when I went to measure it, I spun the prop just to see and it was clicking just a little bit. This leads me to this Question. How do I get this in neutral complete (spins free no clicks) now that the lower unit is dropped? I measured it anyways and it was at 21 7/16" but I'm sure that's meaningless right now. Hopefully this is just something simple I'm missing.

You should be able to find nuetral with the lower unit off !----------Shift it a few times to get the feel for nuetral.---There are 2 different models of 90 hp make sure you get the correct measurement to the center of the hole with unit in nuetral.-----Post that measurement as you took it apart.---That helps in determining what is wrong / possibly wrong.----Without exact information you will not find the answer !

My original question was HOW to shift it with the LU dropped? I have tried to move it up or down by hand but it's not moving at all.

You need to turn the prop while shifting.-------There is a detent ball / spring in the mechanism and it may take a small boy to move the rod.----Is it in gear now ??

??----Put a nail through the hole for a handle.--------If it is in reverse you need to pull UP on the rod.

I got it in Neutral and measured it. It's at 21 3/8" to the center of the hole.

Is it a 90 V4 looper or crossflow motor? If it's a 20" shaft your not to far off but the tolerances are to the 1/32" so it has to be precise. A 90 degree V4 Crossflow is 21 and 27/32" plus or minus 1/32".. The 90 V4 Looper motor is 21 and 15/16" plus or minus 1/32".. That is assuming you have a 20" shaft on the motor..
