Sounds like it's running on one cyl. Pull each spark plug wire one at a time and see if you have a dead cyl. If you have then check the compression and the spark.

Is that a carb motor or a FITCH? Carb motors do not have limp home mode. I do not think you can use premix on FITCH motors....Model number would be real helpful

I do not believe that feature exists. Disconnect the wires that go to the OMS pump, to silence the alarm. Check for all spark plugs firing. Check for overheat, as this kills spark to part of the motor.

May I ask why you are wanting to disconnect a working VRO?

It is not a good idea to run an outboard past idle whithout it being under a load (either in a tank with a test wheel or on the water).

ALSO - check the brand of plugs. Your motor is designed to run Champions.
Strange but true. Autolights, NGK, etc... will make your motor run different and
with that you will be chasing gremlins. Especially at Idle.

The telltale is just a sample of the water it is pumping. If you want to know if it is overheating, remove the cowling and put your hand on the cylinder head. If you can touch it for a few seconds, it is not overheating. If you see burned paint, it is overheating, so look before you touch..
