ok 96 gm tb5 ign system used mercruiser manual followed instructions to the letter to set timming . motor starts ok at 8 btc revs to 3500 w/ no problem watching the timming while running I am getting no more than 8-12 btc and the engine is dogging . If I manually advance the timming it runs great But I have starting problems It seems the only way I can get any advance is to do it manually while running Also I have an anti knock module on it .It has never knocked that I could hear I did replace the a/n sensor Is it possible the a/n module is preventing any advance ? I hope this is a little more thorough . It appears that nThis system is stuck in base Timming mode and is unable to return to normal operating mode.

What engine model do you have? I am guesing a 5.7LX or 350MAG or I could guess something else?

Do you know the timing module curve? it is usually on the ICM, such as V8-24S.

Was the knock sensor replaced for the same problem? or was it broken off or something else? Was the replacement the exact part number for your serial number engine?

Have you gone thru the knock module diagnostic tests in the service manual?

Is your battery fully charged and outputting the correct voltage? The ICM will behave flaky at lower voltages.

What voltage do you read at the purple/white wire when not in base timing?
