Howdy fellas, the DIYer in me refuses to give up just yet and take my motor in to mechanic, so i thought i would try you guys for some technical advice.
I have a J50ESLEUS. 4 weeks ago i took it out and ran a tank of gas through it, engine ran like a champ and has run that way for the previous 3 years that ive owned it.(bought it used from a boat mechanic) The only problem i had that day on the water was my hydraulic tilt/trim cylinder leaked. So I commensed to taking that apart in order to replace the seals and gaskets in it. I banged on the pin holding the ram in the transom bracket for a week and never got it to back out, so i ended up taking the hydraulic unit apart backwards from the bottom since i could get that pin out. 3 weeks ago i got the tilt/trim put back together, air out and full of ATF and it worked like new. So I went to fire up the engine fri. night (3/15) to prep for a sat morning fishing trip and low and behold the engine will not idle. It would run with some throttle and rev to full thottle but would not idle. Other symptoms i noticed that night was coming off the throttle from wot to idle the engine would stay wide open for a few seconds before idlling back down, and on one occasion it stayed wot for so long i turned off the key to kill the engine and it kept running! I had to choke it out to kill it, lol.
So i did what i thought you guys would suggest first. I took the fuel lines apart from the tank to the carbs and blew them with compressed air, making sure to clean the inline fuel filter good. Then i took the carbs apart cleaning them out with brake cleaner and compressed air. I put a small piece of stainless steel wire throught all the ports and jets. I replaced the spark plugs and the coil.
After putting everything back together I fired it up and she purrs like a kitten. But now guess what? when i throttle up it backtalks at about half way and on up to wide open. When i say back talk i mean it does not die out, it starts spitting and sputtering, kinda like backfiring or missing.
It will throttle up from idle and you can hear the rpms picking up but she gets lazy right about half way and wont climb anymore. What do you guys suggest? I apologize for the long monologue, i needed to vent.
