Howdy fellas, the DIYer in me refuses to give up just yet and take my motor in to mechanic, so i thought i would try you guys for some technical advice.

I have a J50ESLEUS. 4 weeks ago i took it out and ran a tank of gas through it, engine ran like a champ and has run that way for the previous 3 years that ive owned it.(bought it used from a boat mechanic) The only problem i had that day on the water was my hydraulic tilt/trim cylinder leaked. So I commensed to taking that apart in order to replace the seals and gaskets in it. I banged on the pin holding the ram in the transom bracket for a week and never got it to back out, so i ended up taking the hydraulic unit apart backwards from the bottom since i could get that pin out. 3 weeks ago i got the tilt/trim put back together, air out and full of ATF and it worked like new. So I went to fire up the engine fri. night (3/15) to prep for a sat morning fishing trip and low and behold the engine will not idle. It would run with some throttle and rev to full thottle but would not idle. Other symptoms i noticed that night was coming off the throttle from wot to idle the engine would stay wide open for a few seconds before idlling back down, and on one occasion it stayed wot for so long i turned off the key to kill the engine and it kept running! I had to choke it out to kill it, lol.

So i did what i thought you guys would suggest first. I took the fuel lines apart from the tank to the carbs and blew them with compressed air, making sure to clean the inline fuel filter good. Then i took the carbs apart cleaning them out with brake cleaner and compressed air. I put a small piece of stainless steel wire throught all the ports and jets. I replaced the spark plugs and the coil.

After putting everything back together I fired it up and she purrs like a kitten. But now guess what? when i throttle up it backtalks at about half way and on up to wide open. When i say back talk i mean it does not die out, it starts spitting and sputtering, kinda like backfiring or missing.

It will throttle up from idle and you can hear the rpms picking up but she gets lazy right about half way and wont climb anymore. What do you guys suggest? I apologize for the long monologue, i needed to vent.

Doing some reading on similar symptoms with other motors and it sounds like it could be going into "Slow Mode" caused by a bad temperature sensore. Does anyone have experience with this?

I don't know if I'm going to have any helpful suggestions to fix your issue, but here's some advice;
#1 STOP free revving your engine, especially to WOT! The only acceptable time for an engine to be brought to WOT is under load, and revving the snot out of them doesn't fix them! What you experienced when you couldn't shut it down is a "run away two stroke". Luckally you were thinking quick enough to choke it to shut it down, but it could have resulted in catastrophe for the engine.

#2 Brake cleaner is not carb cleaner. It doesn't have the solvents in it that carb cleaner has, and can be ineffective for dissolving some of the junk you find in a carburetor. You may want to clean your carb again with the right stuff.

#3 NEVER stick anything solid/hard in the jets. A blast of cleaner, some compressed air, maybe a little wooden tooth pick, but never metal on metal. Jet's are calibrated a certain size. Placing any kind of metal in soft brass jets can open them up, and change how much fuel they flow.

Good luck ;)

I had somewhat of a "runaway" last year. Throttle stuck while on muffs.....I ripped spark plug wires off in under a second! Electric choke wasn't working, so choking it want an option.

It's def a scary thang.

Def DON'T rev an engine while it's muffs regardless.

OH man, thank you guys for the advice and heads up on what NOT to do....

Now to give some feedback to someone on here who may be experiencing the same symptoms I had I wanted to say.... I realize this problem is not as common as a "no idle" or "wont accelerate" issue. I searched the web pretty hard and found some helpful threads on The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum. Also there were some videos on youtube that showed motors acting and sounding like mine. After doing all the fuel system troublshooting i was leaning hard towards an electrical problem and most of what i read about "slow mode" engines supported that. And most of the problems that caused a false slow mode engine were either a bad temperature sensor or a bad power pack. I trouble shot the temperature sensor first since it was easiest and cheapest by unplugging the sensor from the power pack and whoalla! Engine performed like a gem.

Hope this helps and good luck!
