Wanting to check my WOT timing and was reading the Joe Reeves timing procedure and have questions, looking for advice.

98 115 (E115SLECM) looper

1) I understand I need to disconnect the ?Fast Start? and want to see what is the best means to do this. Looking at the diagram the Yellow/Red wire should I disconnect this from the solenoid or can I simply unplug the connector (Yellow/Black; Brown; White/Black; Yellow/Red) ?

2) I don?t have a spiffy multi-cylinder spark tester.. Was thinking on a more simple alternative, leave the plugs in the boot with a hose clamp firmly around the threads. Wire lead up under the hose clamp with nice alligator clip that will clamp onto head bolt.

I just put a new power pack and the last thing I want to do is fry it.. Motor is new to me, still working out the glitches. Idle timing was way off reason I want to check WOT timing.

Thanks,
Fred

Remove throttle cable and set WOT. Disconnect yellow/red from solenoid. With key in on position, power up the solenoid stud you removed wire from. Check timing. Then to double check yourself, reconnect the yellow/red wire and crank with key switch. Check timing again to see if you gained 10 deg.

How much was your idle timing off by? 10deg by chance? If so, be sure you recheck with "quick start off"

My idle timing was off by 14deg, was @ 18deg and the spark/throttle pickup linkage was not set correctly. It was set as far back to the rear from the spark cam as it could go.. I set the timing pointer as outlined in the manual and a sync & link and reset the spark/throttle pickup. So now after the quickstart goes off idle timing is @ 4deg. Before replacing the power pack, you could hardly notice a difference with the quickstart on/of, now with the CDI pack its very distinct. Once I have the quick start disabled I’ll test it.

One question, do I need to do anything with the temp switch, guess it won’t matter if the quick start is disabled.

Disconnect it to be sure. Not sure about CDI's pack....

Well, this was interesting, I removed throttle cable and set WOT. Disconnected yellow/red from solenoid and went through the procedure and the motor won't crank.. Connect the yellow/red to solenoid it cranks. Must be something specific with CDI??

Anyway, took it out and checked it running WOT and it was dead on..
