98 Bayliner 2050 SS prop question

My 98 Bayliner with a 5.0 litre and alpha one gen 2 outdrive. My current prop is a polished SS 21x14 3 blade. I can get 53 mph by GPS at 4800 rpm or so and I get to plane pretty fast already. I was wondering would I have a better top end and better maneuverability at lower speeds with a 4 blade prop? And what size 4 blade? Just wondering if anyone has similar set-up. Thanks all

Re: 98 Bayliner 2050 SS prop question

First prop size is all ways listed Diameter X pitch 14 X 21.
Very basically a 4 blade usually will lower top end. It should improve hole shot, stay on plane easier at reduced throttle and will likely handle better at speed and around the dock. Usually suggested to drop 1" in pitch to make up for the extra drag of the 4 blade.
If you go to aluminum it will complicate the change making it less predictable.
Your not likely to find anyone with exactly the same setup but there are knowledgeable people here that can help.

Reason for a change would only be for maneuverability around the docks. Thought id take off the hydrofoil to see how it helps also.

Definitely remove the hydrofoil.

Also, a matte finish on the prop (versus polished) will give you another 0.00001 mph.

53 is pretty fast for that boat. I don't see you getting much more than that.

Re: 98 Bayliner 2050 SS prop question

keep in mind that I don't have a 4 blade and have never ran one but from my calculations show your speed will probalby drop to 48-49 mph with a 20p 4 blade. If that doesn't bother you then it's worth a shot.... then you will know which one you like best and keep the other for you spare. Watch your rpm. To get more speed you would need to go to 23, but probably not worth it.

I fella I know who has been boating for 40+ years told me something that makes perfect sense, he said..... "Once you find a boat that works well, leave it alone and go boating!" So I think ill just remove the hydrofoil and go boating! Thanks for the info fellas !

The reason it planes quickly is probably due to the "hydrofoil". If you remove it, the time to plane could double. What Brand of hydrofoil is it? Some are better than others.

I agree that your rpm/speed look good.
