A Close Call for me Wednesday

Tuesday night about 10, I got some real bad stomach cramps. Really some very unbearable pain. Took my Prilosec OTC, drank half bottle of Mallox, and a hand full of Tums. NO relief what so ever. I got very little sleep. Got up Wednesday morning, got ready and went to work at 5am. I still felt bad with lots of pain in my lower gut. I made a few service calls and thought that maybe the pain would let up. By 8 in the morning, I called my boss and told him what was going on and that I was on my way to the emergency room.

I called my wife (which works in the ER) to let her know I was on my way. Got checked in by 8:30 and went through some tests. By 9:30 they were prepping me for surgery. It turns out that my appendix was on the verge of bursting. Spent my first night ever in a hospital. (Pretty good for being in my 50's now)

I finally got released and now at home. Very sore to say the least. My boss is not very happy since I cannot work for a week. Then I'll be on a very light duty for another 4 weeks. In my job, there isn't any such thing as light duty. My tool tote alone weighs 35lbs! and I'm not to lift over 10 lbs. Its going to be very interesting to say the least.

Doc told me that I was very lucky in going to the ER when I did. If I had waited another couple of hours, I would probably still be in the hospital or dead. Boy that makes me feel a whole lot better.

So I guess I will be padding my posts a bit more than usual in the next week or so :D

That is cutting it close. Ruptured appendix can be deadly. Wonder why we even have one. They can be removed with no ill effect yet it can kill you if it ruptures.

Glad you are on the road to recovery. Take it easy and enjoy the time off.

SS Mayfloat: I know you are very hard working and concientous person.
But this is the time to take advantage of the medical benefits you are entitled to. This is NOT WELFARE!! You have earned it.

Follow your doctor's orders and too bad if your boss is not happy. If he pushes you to do ANYTHING outside of your doctor's orders, tell your boss to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Get well soon and now is the time you can really pad your post count!:D

Re: A Close Call for me Wednesday

Yup, its easy to put up with the pain and shrug it off, but this time I knew something wasn't right. I could actually feel a hard large bump in my gut. When I would press on it, the pain would ease up until I let go and then it was pure eye waterin hurtin going on.

My boss has already informed me that he will not let me work until I have a release order from the Doc. He said that others have hurt themselves at work due to not following docs orders to stay home. This then becomes a Workmans Compensation case when they return to work without a release order. It then becomes to a very logistical nightmare as he calls it.

This is depressing me more than what the winter weather has done. The temps are finally above freezing which means I can actually work on the boat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,until now! I'm just glad there isn't that much to do to it. Shifter cable, shower faucet, distributor cap, and change the bellows. I think it is time for my son-in-law to learn how to take instructions on how to fix my boat! :D

Hopefully I'll be all healed by mid April as I have told Wooterken that I would help him on servicing his outdrive and getting his boat back into the water. It might not be that bad as one friend said he is interested in learning how to do it. Guess I can be the brain and he can be my hands. That is how it going to be when I'm on light duty. I have a friend that was laid off from a job that my boss said he could work with me during that time.

As reading some of these posts, many pretty much have me pegged on how I am about doctors. Guess that is why I'm pushing my wife to be a registered (personal) nurse. We are hoping that she gets into her clinicals this fall.

The deciding point in which I knew I had to go was when I went over a set of railroad tracks and became nauseated.

As a note for everyone, ALWAYS listen to what your body is telling you. If the pain is causing you to tear up,,,,,,,its not normal.

Thanks for the kind replies..............SS

Appendicitis is no joke... I used to work in a hospital, I've seen them go very bad...

The important thing is that you caught it at the right time, and it's good to hear you're okay.

I have to agree with everyone else though, listen to the doctor... When I was 21 I had back surgery... I thought I knew more than a doctor, and I was supposed to be off work for four months... I lasted two weeks... I went back to work... I've regretted it ever since...

Glad you are okay, SS.

That appendix business is something that only happens once, so you are done with it forever. :)

Glad you caught it time.
They make tool totes on wheels with retractable handles now.
This will give you something to do while you're laid up.
Search on Stanley toolboxes. I know they make a couple.

At easier catching it early and the recuperation is a lot quicker.

When I was 17, my appendix burst on a Friday, spent the weekend sicker than a dog. Finally on Monday, we went to the hospital and left 30 days later.
