Re: A little help identifying my engine please...

You have what looks like Volvo manifolds and risers on your engine. Here is how you would plumb it with the thermostat housing shown by achris in the parts breakdown.

Would I be taking the chance of water going into the cylinders considering gravity/water tends to head to the lowest point? Just wondering if I'm looking at this right. Thanks!

Not exactly sure what you are referring too? But if it has to do with the water from the thermostat housing to the front of the manifolds and not the bottom of them, no it's not a problem. Volvo has always plumbed their engines to the front of the manifold with no problems and using the same engine the height of the elbows is the same.

What makes an Auto Fuel pump different than a marine fuel pump (mechincal)?

Anybody know?

You need to start your own thread Turbo, or do a forum search. That question has been answered many times.

Its was talked about at the begining of this thread that the OP has an Auto Carb and Pump so I thought I would ask the question.

I'll search instead.

Thanks

UPDATE: Moved the cooling lines coming from the thermostat housing to the bottom and then plugged the top holes.exhaust fixed.jpg

Re: A little help identifying my engine please...

Before and after pics... new carb, dissy, coil, alternator, fuel pump & added regulator, wiring harness, buss terminal, battery power switch, exhaust modified to cool better, a new tachometer and replaced the fuel sending unit. Runs healthy!!! Very pleased... positive feedback and criticism/suggestions appreciated... going underway on Tuesday. Thx!!! Also, replaced the slave solenoid and relay for tilt (it would go up, but needed to click a hundred times to go down)done.jpgdone1.jpgdone2.jpgengine.jpgtach.JPG

Also replaced the intake gasket and valve cover gaskets-2 of the 4 valve cover bolts were not even making contact and oil was slowly flowing down both sides of the block:facepalm:.. made sure to cover holes so no debris went inside... did a very meticulous job... I think of it as installing a new roof on your house... why not check and take all the preventative maintenance right before a layer of new shingles is applied. A couple of buddies would asked regularly, "When you getting that vessel underway?" I replied each time, "When she is ready to be underway." I was never out to break any track records. I wanted to absorb everything I was learning and, mainly, do it right (+ safely) the first time. I've spent nearly $3000, but I have zero qualms considering the price I bought it for and the vessel/trailer is structurally sound. Thank goodness I didn't have to pay I mechanic...neighbor and I are trading off work...I spent many years painting (interior/exterior) plus building homes to put me through college... and he hates to paint (zero patience). Robert Frost said, "Good fences make good neighbors." I don't need a fence on his side of the yard though;)

Re: A little help identifying my engine please...

Hey guys, big fan of iBoats' forum, I have picked up several things from your inputs and tried to apply them to my issues, slowly but surely. My issue for the past 920 weeks is that I am unable to identify the year of my mercruiser motor, someone removed the ID tag with the engine number. The only two numbers I am able to pull from the block is 19172756, and GM14097293. I have to trace and test the ignition wires because turning the key I only get the electric fuel pump to turn on but no rotation or any sounds from the engine, the only option I have right now is jumping the solenoid to get it to turn but even then I cannot get the motor to rotate. After I bought the motor I took it to mercruiser and those guys were not able to identify the year making it real difficult to buy corresponding parts. The only information they were able to give me was that it was a late 80s or early 90s and that is the information I used to purchase the starter, I do feel that this information is incorrect. I also eel that maybe the starter is not correct for the motor. I can only find casted in the block "4.3LG V6. I need help so any information or direction you can give me would be great. I can post pictures if requested to help better identify.... I appreciate you guys and keep it up. Thanks

Welcome to iboats jota27, you really need to start a new thread of your own with your question. This is gwizzers thread about HIS engine.

Things look a lot better than when you started. For sure it's a lot safer. You may find that tach not a good idea on a boat. They aren't really designed for being out in the weather like a marine tach is.
On your trim problem, do you have the single or double solenoid type pump? Got a picture of it?

Tilt & trim, it does both. Sounds like it. Post a picture of it.

Re: A little help identifying my engine please...

Yes, that will do. You do have 2 solenoids. You said you had to click down about a hundred times, did it click when you pushed the button? If so, and since it works fine, you probably just have a faulty solenoid. (Down has the green wires to it). Just jump across the two big terminals of the solenoid and see if the motor works each time.

I think we have a misunderstanding... I used to need to click the tilt toggle down like a hundred times to get it to go down, but click once and it would go up w/o a problem. I already replaced the solenoid and it now goes up and down w/o any problems:) Wonder if I should install a trim gauge? What do you think?
