I have a 1964 Evinrude Big Twin 40HP (long shaft) that I'm tying to remove the lower unit. I removed the rear lower outer cover and then removed the long hidden bolt that goes top down. I removed the side plate and then the inner plate and then removed the shift linkage bolt. I removed all of the lower bolts and the lower unit is loose as well as the 5" long shaft adapter (short to long shaft). It looks like it should just drop but it's not. I looks like the shift linkage is hanging up. Just will not let go. Is there a trick to this??? Am I missing something?
Model # 40452 S
Serial # E01387

Thanks guys!

Okay. Update
I used the shifter lever on the outside of the motor and was finally able to pull the upper shift lever out of the brass linkage. But…. The lower unit is STILL stuck! Won’t drop.
Is this the old rubber ring at the top just dried up and hard holding it?

Usually it's a stuck driveshaft in the crank....

So how do we get this bad boy unstuck???
Not sure you can....I don't know that motor well so hopefully you will get more opinions.

In more modern day motors it usually means it's junk or someone figures a way to get it apart and then does a Humpty Dumpty!

I got it. Finally! Your little reply was just what I needed. I just wanted to ensure that I didn’t miss something and risked doing massive damage.
Thanks!
Excellent, be sure to put some grease on the splines when you put it back on....and none on the very end. I take it you just pulled a little harder or put a wedge in it.

I used a large hurky flat construction pry bar. It was maid for pulling nailed lumber apart. I just slipped it in between the housings and applied a LOT of pressure. This outboard has net been run in decades so it's fighting me EVERY STEP of the way! It was a combination of the rubber O-ring at the top or the drive shaft but more so the rubber rings for the two water tubes. They had a death grip on the copper water pipes!!! One pipe stayed up in the upper housing. I'm converting this from a long shaft to a short shaft for the plywood boat that I will be building. The "Playboy" boat.
SO far I snapped off two bolts and found two more broken off. The corrosion is real on this one.. I got one out and have started to drill and use a reverse thread puller. I'm nervous as hell about fracturing the housing!!! Once I got through the bolt I started pre soaking the broken bolt with Aero Kroil. I hope that stuff will wick into the threads. If that works...... Rinse and repeat.

Heat and time and lots of it. Good luck.

I doubt it was the rubber parts.-----I think rust from crankshaft jammed the drive shaft in the crank.----A very common thing on motors that get little or no loving care !!
