And Pigs can fly. You wont convince me ,as my 22 Holiday maxed out with a very good 200 Johnson 21 pitch prop will do right a bit above 50. Be silly to even think of running that fast except to test it. Boat not made for that sustained speed. If one wants to do that ,must have a death wish and should never take the family out on the water.

Have you ever seen a bass boat going 65-70 mph? IMHO that boat is around 45, maybe a little more.

Maybe they have the GPS set to Kilometers. It could be 67 km/h.

If you go to a prop calculator you will see that 67 is impossible with that HP+Pitch+Weight+RPM...I do agree that it is probably KPH - which makes it almost 50 - still impressive

What does "omc v-8 lower unit" in the description mean? Higher gear ratio lower unit?

My thoughts exactly, I've been in and watched numerous 70mph + bass boats...and that was definately not doing it.

Re: A Starcraft video

If I was more computer savoy the profile I just made would be full of pictures of that boat from the start of the project to what it is now. My Father and I have been in the aluminum boat biz for over 20 years and let me say that chieftain can handle every bit of stress that the 175 can throw at it, and no it is not impossible for that hull to reach that speed. No thanks to the completely over killed structural rebuild that we gave her. Including a 5'' taller transom with 100 thous. splash pan/transom brace , 1/2'' backing plate , 1/4'' x 2 1/2'' angle running the full length of the transom , extended transom to hull braces , 42'' dia. cuddy wall/doorway wall(essentially one giant brace), and so fourth. Way to much to type hopefully will figure how to load pics on my profile, any help would be appreciated. In those video's we were in the mid 50's but with the bigger carb's , upgrade reed valves and fresh from the "prop shop" 14 1/4'' x24p turbo two propeller , it gps'd at 67 mph with myself and brother. I don't care if you guys think I'm full of ****. I will post a GPS pic when I run it this spring. Bye the way after gutting that boat of 1960's luxury's and plywood , the hull without the engine , fuel or batteries weighed under 750 lbs. About 15 lbs of that was just rivets we added to ribs and sister keels. I swear I will back up every one of these claims.

Sorry guys I misspoke , that boat does not have sister keels. I was thinking of one of our others

I'm confused on one thing, on the video it says johnson 150, on here you said it has a 175? I'm definetly not trying to say your lying at all. I just watched the video and saw the post for the first time today. I was just wondering which engine was on the back f it for the 67mph test run???

Re: A Starcraft video

Here is a response I got from him when I asked him about the video. Hopefully he will send me the pics and I will post them on here. Sounds like an interesting conversion!!

Your fast Chieftain The following link is to the Starcraft forum on iboats. I my self own a 18' 1969 Starcraft Starchief aluminum cabin boat. I found your video on you tube and posted a link to it on the Starcraft forum to ask how it was possible for your boat to achieve the 67 mph you have claimed. Can you either create yourself an account and explain it or explain it to me and I will post it for you? Is the boat gutted? How many feet is it? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=3024279&posted=1#post3024279

The boat is 18 ft long. It started as a project my dad and I started about two years ago. The whole concept was to be able to fishing camper for my brother , father and I to use for a week out of the summer. Since I can remember my dad has bought and sold aluminum boats. Over the years he learned to rivet (real rivets) and we started repairing them as well as selling them. We have had a fef older Islanders and chieftains but never held on to one. We came across this one and went to work. Started by gutting it , rebuilt the transom to accomidate a 25'' shaft , used 100 thous. to build our own splash pan/ slash transom brace. Then filled in the existing gap with more 100 thous. Tucked a 1/4'' x 2 1/2'' inch aluminum angle the full length of the ransom and topped it off with a 18'' x 32'' 1/2'' thick aluminum plate on the rear of the transom. The original idea was not to make silly fast but I had OMC Sea Drive laying around , so I swapped the sea drive bracket with a trim and tilt mid section off a 200 ocean pro , and away we went. The real beauty of the boat cannot be seen in the video , we rebuilt the cuddy wall/entry way as a 42'' port hole wall. Fully riveted , fully functional as a brace. It siffend the cuddy wobble right up. Seeing that my father and I part boats for a living we had plenty of stainless goodies to throw at it. I it has come a long way since the video's. If you are intersted I can send you detailed progression pictures. These starcraft are of some of the highest quality hulls we seen on aluminum boats. He has a whole backyard full of old Wadge Makers , wolverines , Crestliners , Alumacrafts etc. He's into the vintage aspect. I upgraded the reed valves and carbs to a 175 and stepped the prop to a 14 1/4'' 24p turbo prop. It is very steady at high rates of speed but is back heavy at a troll. Allthough moving the batteries and tanks to the front did wonders. I will be stripped down and painted come spring. We kind of threw nostalgia out the window and gave it a low profile windshield/air break and other modern goodies. Before we mounted the engine we estimated the weight to be between 550 to 750 lbs(minus batteries and gas). It's been a fun project And I look forward to more Starcraft ventures. P.s. I am not exaggerating the top speed of 67 mph. This boat is incredibly light for that kind of horsepower. I will take a shot of the gps next time I'm in it with a camera. Charlie

Wow, thanks for the great info. I would love to have the pictures. If you send them to me I will post them and the info with the rest of the guys on the Starcraft forum. I have come across some of those OMC seadrives before for cheap $ on craigslist before and have wondered about converting them to a regular outboard. I myself have a 1969 Starcraft Starchief and have been contemplating an outboard conversion. This is a link to my boat. If you register and log in it will automatically show you the pics. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=347131

Thanks, Jason

It would be so fun to have a bunch of parts like that sitting around to experiment with!

Very interesting. I would love to see more. BBB83 there's a lot of good guys on here. Stick around and show us some speed. 67 seems awful fast but hey, you seem to know your chiz. I really want to see it run again.

Re: A Starcraft video

I would need to go for a ride with my GPSS to believe it.

A slightly worked over 200merc with a 24p chopper on a 18'ss got over 55mph(tested with two different gps units).

As well built as our beloved tinny's are they are just not very efficient thus hard to make them go fast.

My bee 67 KMH on my other boat I took it out for a test run. Had a friend watching the GPS he told me a speed. I was so pumped came home and posted it on another board. Pretty much got my post handed to me. Went out and checked the GPS and yep it was set on KM. Posted the retraction all was good.
