Interesting topic. <br /><br />Years ago, I had to fabricate my own version of the "rosco jack plate". I had an old sears boat that had a 17.5" transom. Old sears engines fit well, but nothing else. Once the new plate was installed, I mounted the engine and connected the pulley cable steering stuff and it worked fine.<br /><br />With regard to the skeg. Boats usually have a skeg (the thing welded to your keel) running down the middle OR strakes. Your boat has both for some reason. They are both intended to provide directional stability. A skeg that runs all of the way to the transom as your's does, will disturb water going to the prop. This could result in some cavitation. Cutting it so that the skeg ends 12 to 18 inches before the transom is the proper way to do it. As the boat yard person suggested, ideally it will taper from full heigth to nothing. Again, the ideal situation would be for it to end at least 12 inches from the transom. <br /><br />Good luck. Look forward to reading about the outcome.

Hey guys,thanks for catching up.<br /> Firstly,that dummy spit of mine was out of place.Had a xxxx of a day at work,and the cat wouldn't stay still long enough for me to kick it!<br /> fishingdan,welcome to my dramas.It's good to get some positive comments on my problems.Yeah,the boat does have excellent directional stability.As I mentioned before,the boat handles perfectly.I can't wait to add a little speed.At the moment,I only get about 22mph if I wring it's neck.I'd just love 30mph.<br /> I have to drop the steering fixing point on the motor,but have it worked out.<br /> The motor obviously sits a little higher,but it doesn't look too odd.When I rig it all up,I'll post some "after" pics.I'll fix that skeg...it makes sense to cut it back as we said.<br /> Fireman,apart from my blurb you just read,all is good.I won't get to fix it before you go away,so have a safe and happy trip.catch lots of fishies ,drink lots of frosty beer...mmmmm beer...and I hope you beat your brother after an epic battle.<br /> thanks again ....

Well folks,the rosco jackplate is fitted.the steering is connected.All I need is a break in the rain to test it out.Guaranteed by Sunday.<br /> I'll let you know.

Nah,fireman,it's OK.<br /> Finally tested it today. I got another 5km/h.About 2mph.<br /> On the one hand,I was expecting a little more.<br /> On the other,it's a bit over 10% imrovement.just for lifting the motor.What the hell more do I want ??.<br /> There was absolutely no sign of cavitation.The steering is lighter {duh},and I really hung it in the turns,and it never let go.<br /> I didn't get to adjust the trim today,so that may help.I also need to Change the prop.<br /> But I also didn't touch the superkeel.The 3 things it was blamed for{apart from the famine in Africa}were ;Cavitation<br /> Disturbed Water to prop<br /> Slowing boat down.<br /> One down,two to go.....<br /> <br /> I'll do some tinkerin',you guys do some more postin',and we'll see if we can't squeeze another few out of the 35 horsies.<br /> Thanks again....

Well folks,<br /> after much drilling,grinding and filing,I finally cut back the dreaded superkeel yesterday.Adjusted the transom mount rod back one hole and took her for a run today.<br /> Got another 2.5km/h,with top speed now 42km/h {26mph}. That's an increase of 20 % on the old top speed.<br /> I'm positive the keel did not hinder me at all.The extra bit I got today was from the motor trim.<br /> Overall,I guess I have to be happy with 20 % extra,just for lifting the motor. The next step is a new prop to try to get me close to 30mph.She still pulls out of the hole easily,so I'm thinking of replacing my 10.5x11" with a 10x13". Any thoughts ?? No,I don't have a tacho.I suppose that's next.<br /> Anyway,looking forward to some more input from you guys.<br /> Thanks again...

need the tach to know what your wot rpms are. then you can adjust props from there.

Hey rockhopper ,good to see you back. I removed about 12".It looks a lot more "balanced" now.The prop is at the right height;and without the keel it looks a little neater.<br /><br /> fishingdan, yeah the tacho is near.Are they reasonably simple to instal ?<br /><br /> Just had a good look at my cam/roller and throttle control rod adjustments, And they both could do with some fine tuning tomorrow before I run out of daylight.<br /> Here's a curly one.....What speed should I expect from a 29 year old motor ?? 35 hp on an open 14.5' aluminium runabout. I'd love 30mph...or am I dreaming?<br /> All feedback welcome. Thanks,guys

Faster than rowing and quick enough to get into trouble. I guess about 20mph give or take a couple assuming the pitch of the prob is allowing max rpm's. She looks a bit heavier than our ali runabouts. I assume its inshore waters were talking about.

And so on.<br /> It is pretty well made.Very strong.I think that's how they were all <br />made in '76.<br /> All river work so far.On a calm day I'd take her out of the heads.But best leave that sort of trip to a suitably sized boat.<br /> I did the link&synch on the throttle cable and cam.I had a problem with the last 20 % of my throttle lever travel not advancing the armature any further. The fiddling fixed it.Now,every inch of travel in the lever advances the armature plate.<br /> If that don't get me a few more mph,I'll find something that will.Like the prop.<br /> Thanks for hangin' in,I'll let you know if the adjustments did any good.

See old buddy these things are not just fairly simple to work on they are addictive too. It's a great feeling to know that not only is your donk running right but you are getting everything out of it that you can.

Yeah,fireman...your right.<br /> The greatest thing I've done so far is to get the ORIGINAL workshop manual.It's actually the Evinrude manual,but they're all sisters !!.<br /> Little jobs like the link/synch are so much easier when you can see your motor in the picture.<br /> It's all good fun.The neighbours see me tinkering about and wonder how far I'm getting in the crap.Then I start her up,she idles a treat,and they are starting to believe I have mechanical ability.They used to rub their chins and shake their heads.<br /> Enjoy the trip,take care.<br /> Will post results of test run on Sunday.

Well, Took her out for the test today.<br /> I must have mis-linked my synch.I went from 42km/h to 33km/h.Not the desired effect.<br /> I think I'll have a closer look at my manual,and try it again.<br /> So much for mechanical ability !!<br /> Will post results soon.
