Rwise, yes I have been that poor.
I was an E-3 in the USN.
I had been married 7 years and my daughter was 3 years old when I joined the canoe club. lived in forretsal villiage housing in great lakes IL making a whopping 600 a month and 100 a month was taken out to pay for my GI bill.
the myth that your seabag is issued is just that,a myth. mine cost 869 dollars and they took it out of my 520 a month E-1 pay.
most all the enlisted there qualified for welfare, a few had to take it. I did not.
but yes the choice between food and gas came up often, the choice between doing what I had to do as a husband and father came up a lot the first couple years.
minimum wage is a joke, but it makes good CNN coverage for political posturing.
sometimes folks get into a mess not of their own making and ya gotta take care of them temporarily as a society.
my beef is the folks that make social aid a way of life.
years ago my mom was working as an RN at mobile infirmary, they had hired a young woman ,single 2 kids, as a CNA trainee from a govt program.
when she completed the program and was hired full time it put her 10 dollars a month over the aid limit so the aid was shut off completely.
she had to quit and go back on welfare to stay alive.
thats the type things I dislike.
I dislike the mothers who have 6 babies by 5 different fathers and never had a job as well.
a simple solution, no babies daddies names on the birth cert and no welfare money, we get babies daddies name and he either supports his child or goes to jail.
once in jail we can find him a job to assist him with child support.
its not the social programs I dislike, most overall are well intentioned. most are to politically connected and subject to abuse.
when the rehub party took over control in 2000 I was estatic, I knew my party would have the chance to make great strides in reforming a lot of this.
man was I wrong,again.
after 6 years our domestic policy still is rather sucky sucky.
so minimum wage is just a political ploy. dont buy into it.
you think that car dealer down the street would just eat a 100 dollar a car increase? ya think joe schmucks meat market would eat a 300 dollar a carcass increase ?
nope. will be passed along.
thats the capitalist side of the nation.
ya think that gas station down on the corner will eat the 3 cents a gallon price increase they just got stuck with ?
man I hate politicians that posture for election time.

venezuela just raised their minimum wage and has, in many ways, tougher labor laws than the US. I see its a boom town.
I really dont care what mexico or VE or canada or anyother country is doing.
I do care what this country is doing and I dont see raising the minimum wage 40 dollars a week is gonna make much difference to average joe schmuck.
just maybe ole average joe schumck would invest that extra 40 a week in their money market or mutual fund account.
or maybe it will buy extra diapers.
most likly would buy an extra carton of beer and some smokes.

They all work to feed the colony, not just themselves or the well off, they all keep the burrough clean, keep predators out amongst other things. Their goals are much different from yours. They do not care about getting "theirs". Their only care is that their colony survives. The entire colony, not just themselves or the ones lucky enough to be heathy, or the ones with a silver spoon in their mouth. They do not require a college degree to be equal or be fed and protected.

We're sitting here, as of today, looking at an unemployment rate of 4.2% (USA).

My view is that if you WANT to work, you can. When did minimum wage become a "living" wage"? Here's a news flash, you CAN'T live on it, and you shouldn't.

Where I live, AZ, you can't find a min. wage job (except government), (that in itself should say something). Minimum, (heartbeat required) is at least $8.00/hr.

The ADA does not enter into this equation, nor should it. That is a special situation. NOBODY is going to hire, (if they are sane) an ADA candidate for less than market prevailing wages. If they do, they are-insane.

That brings up a whole new question. What do we pay the physically/mentally incapable?

There should be no "standard". A "standard" in itself, inhibits them from achieving. Don't we want them to achieve?

Achievement is a great teacher of what to, and what not to do.

not trying to offend, but the average minimum wage worker usually has no motivation to educate themselves.
not all but quite a bit. maddens me to see a customer pay for the meat and diary with WIC checks and the rest of the food with food stamps then the case of beer and two cartons of smokes with cash.
in my entire life I cashed 2 unemployment checks and no food stamps. while in the USN we did get the reduced milk and dairy for my son with WIC.
to me unemployment was harder than actually working.
you wont believe how many folks came by my shop,not for a job, just the signature that they asked.
thats why since the navy placed me on the permmanantly disabled retired list I have worked for myself. that was back in 95.
but thats why I say we dont need to scrap most the programs, we neeed to alter the way they are administered.
if ya need welfare then you must achive certain goals to obtain it.
if ya got 3 kids by 3 dads and ya need welfare then tubal litigation should be a prerequisite. or at least the 3 year norplant. no new babies on the dole.
should be time limits, 3-5 years should be enough if your motivated.
I understand hard times,illness, unplanned pregnabncy whether or not marriage is involved. all these things happen.
however welfare should not be a life choice either.

ok lets say you just graduated high school, your girl friend is pregnant, you are getting maried, you need a place to stay and the only place that will give you a job (right now!) only pays minimum wage (which is to laugh at) how are you going to make it? (without assistance)

My wife and I had a child and I worked my day job, cleaned buildings at night, and mowed lawns on Saturday. Many people won't do that type of work though.

Secondly, you fail to see the importance of Minimum Wage. The idea here is to entice the welfare recipients to join the work force. By creating the minimal standard, more will join the work force and contribute to society in the form of taxes.

The reason why someone is on welfare is because he or she doesn't have the skill necessary to qualify for a high paying job and when he or she does decide to work or forced to work, he or she will more than likely start out at MINIUM WAGE job. By keeping the MINIMUM WAGE at a certain standard, the transition is much smoother. Of course you can't see this. You rather have them walk over to a corner and die peacefully.

Your example of the 60's has more holes than a swiss cheese. Back then a working father could support a family of 4. Not the case now. More over, competition is at a higher level. People today are more than likely to take MINIMUM WAGE job.

On second thought, can you imagine the consequences of not having a MINIMUM WAGE? 8)

Minimum wage = joke, In my neck of the woods if you can find a job for 10 bucks an hour you are very lucky, most employers pay less than min here, (6.15) cost of living is not less that anywhere else, so forget the abolishment of minimum wage and think about capping wages, limit salaries to less than six figures for EVERYONE excluding (business owners) including Politicians, and pay a minimum of 35,000 to anyone that works 40 hours per week. No one is worth some of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that many companies pay their executives... why not just reverse to the bartering system?
