Re: Absolute beginner

one very important reminder. boats don't have brakes!!!! reverse is not a brake. you cannot count on it. when coming into a dock come in slow. practice docking at an empty dock during the week. docking can be a real pain in high winds and waves. you actually can park and boat like a car with practice.

Re: Absolute beginner

Well People, you have been so helpful, that I am going to ask for more help.. I cannot find any info on this boat (what model it is etc)or the motor.. I have all the numbers, but find nothing online when I search.. not even a photo of a similar boat.. I believe I have a Renken 1600 Classic, with an 88HP Evinrude motor, but not sure, and untill I am sure I can't get the necessary handbooks etc. I would also like to buy the zip on side panels and rear panel for the canvas hood, but again, after searching online, I can find nothing. Any help would be appreciated.. Terry.

Re: Absolute beginner

Terry, as far as the zippered panels, you will probably have to take the boat the a marine canvas maker the people that repair and make boat tops. when you do have them make the snap on cover for the bow also, and they can make a snap on panel that goes in the opening below the windshield, this is for cold mornings, on it it start to rain while out. you will find the cost to be high, they think they sew with gold thread. you might find it more economcal to just buy a boat cover.

Re: Absolute beginner

Thanks for the speedy reply.. Much as I thought.. but I never thought about a snapon for the bow, or the door.. great idea, I had wondered how we would go in the rain, now I have the answer.. and a good one at that.. Here is a copy of all the numbers I find on the boat and the engine.. I can't find any of them online and as I said, nothing much about the boat..
Thanks for the comment on the boat, it does have nice lines, and I love it.. Named it "Sweet Caroline" after my wife, who approved the purchase.. Not sure whether naming boats is the done thing here, but I am an aussie, and it is popular over there, as is the the 16ft Half cab cruiser. I am now living in Jackson MS, ..so I have been on the lookout for one for a while, and though this is not a true Half Cab, it is close, and the only one I have come across, and I am delighted with it. Terry.

Model: Renken 1600
Registration number: MI2580AZ and on plate on back of boat BMAA048.889 / BO889

Engine: Evinrude Model J88MBL (CCO) or (CCC) 7
Engine serial number: R7805008 / Outboard Marine Corp USA

Re: Absolute beginner

Terry, can't help you with the boat, but the engine looks like the number is J88MSLCCC 1988 88hp Johnson with a evinrude cover. don't be alarmed covers get damaged all the time, and johnson/evinrude have a lot of interchangeable parts. is that strip on the mid section of the engine red. red and white are johnson colors. as far as a manual goes still searching, as kencook.com anly list the parts catalog.

Re: Absolute beginner

The only colours I see are evinrude.. the thin red lines in the screenshot are the only ones.. I am sure you are right about the motor though, and I am just happy to know a little more about it.. I looked at Kencook, but like you I could only find a multi-engine repair manual.. Thanks for sending out the emails. I appreciate that. Terry.

Re: Absolute beginner

Thanks Gary, I am finding this the most helpful and friendly forum to be on.. Thanks for the comments about the boat.. There is a bit of a story behind the purchase.. rooted in the fact that I looked at her for a long long time before buying her, and appeared to be destined to have her.. I will tell it sometime.
Nice to know you liked the early Renkens as I read a couple of bad reports about the later ones. Terry.

Hi Terry, beautiful lines in your boat. Just wanted to point out that eBay can be a good source of boating stuff - especially manuals, parts lists, decals and engine consumables.

Re: Absolute beginner

Terry,It looks like your boat still has some shine in the finish. If you want that new shine in the gelcoat try some stuff called Poli Glow.
My boat is red and white also and that stuff worked great.Brought the color out to like new.
Mine was pretty much oxidized when i bought it and regular boat wax didn't do much. The poliglow is a once a year treatment. It fills in the pores of the gelcoat and the water beads great.Makes dirt wash off very easy too...
I'm the fix it upper kind of boater...i wish i had taken some before and after pics..

Re: Absolute beginner

Thanks for the tip Gary. I tried a good cleaner/wax on the boat to try and keep what shine there is, but it did not help the oxidisation. The boat must have been stored in a carport I think as the starboard side is better than the port.. I will get some of the PoliGell, and give it a go. Sigijo, I have never used Ebay.. Better take a look.. I am always in the market for a bargain..and I may even be able to get an owners handbook.. once I know for certain what my boat is LOL..Terry.

Re: Absolute beginner

Terry,It's poliGlow...It gives you a solution to scrub the whole boat down to strip oxidation,go over it 2 or 3 times with that step. Then you apply the sealer coats.it brings the color out great! http://myboatstore.com/poliglow.htm
Take a look at it here!

Re: Absolute beginner

Looks good.. I am a bit wary of taking a scrubber to the boat though.. have you ever scrubbed one down? Terry.

Re: Absolute beginner

JTexas gave a great bit of advice that I hope does not get overlooked. Go to the ramp mid-week/off hours if you can and practice a few times. It will make you much more comfortable!! Ever play golf? Remember teeing off with everyone looking?? Same idea but now you have a boat, trailer, car, wind, water....I've been running boats for over 20 years and I still have mine put in the water each year at mid-week so I can take her to the dock with no pressure, go for a nice ride and get re-acquainted!!

Re: Absolute beginner

I agree Bumbles, and I have already taken the advice to heart, practicing reversing the trailer, and just messing about with it on the car.. we are lucky here in that the 33,000 acre Ross Barnett reservoir has heaps of suburban ramps scattered around, and many of them are quiet almost all week around. Terry.
