AD-11 recoil spring installation

You folks have been a tremendous help with my impeller questions. Now, on to another problem I've got.

The motor is a 1957 AD-11, 7.5hp.

The recoil spring broke within the first couple pulls. I have one ordered, that should be here this week. I note that you're all rather reluctant to give instructions on how to wind the spring, perhaps because you don't want the liability. :)

I've replaced the spring in an R/C car, and know how to wind them (or at least did at one time). Is a boat motor recoil done in a similar way? Basically, you start with the spring loose, rope out. Wind all rope into recoil, then pick the rope out from the side of the pulley and unwind the whole thing. Let it recoil back in, pick it out and unwind it from around the pulley again. A couple times should be all it needs, and it should be good and wound up. Or something like that...

Am I on the right track, or do you simply wind the pulley x-number of turns and THEN connect the rope? I can see that working, too, I think. Is there a recommended number of turns, assuming this is a viable method? I don't have the motor in front of me, but remember some sort of markings on the pulley that mentioned "arrow here" along with some other words. Can you enlighten me as to what this means? I'm sure it has something to do with rewinding the recoil spring.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: AD-11 recoil spring installation

It certainly isn't rocket science, just be careful of the spring. The old Seloc manual says to set the spring in and wind it up three revolutions, then install the rope. There'll be a little hole you can drop a nail through to hold it while you get the rope going.
The trick to a proper job is to get the little 'Arrow Here Rope Recoiled' labled spot on the pulley to line up with the arrow on the housing when the rope is retracted. This makes it so the 'right' amount of rope pulls out of the starter before it engages the flywheel.

Hope that helps!

GREAT. I understand perfectly.

And getting the mark to line up correctly with the arrow would be accomplished by adjusting the length of the rope in small increments, I assume?

Thanks so much.

Brian

You've got it. I'm not sure about the pull start handle on your 7.5hp, but if it's rubber with a metal insert then it's a pain to install new rope in. Great handle though - it'll never let go the rope. ;)
Spec shows 70" of 5/32 rope for that starter. They are normally long with the spec.

Thanks, Paul.
You and everyone here are such great helps.

I made my first attempt just now at answering a "what hp is my motor" question that someone new posted. I'll give back when I can....

Brian
