Adjusting boat on Trailer

Goodmorning guys,

Hope everyone is safe and dry from good ole sandy!

I need to adjust my boat (1980 Sea Ray 240, HEAVY!!!), move it forward like 3-4 inches.

You also need to raise the bow stop ABOVE the bow eye and install a safety chain!

Thanks eddie, that can explains why my front is wanting to rise to the sky. I'm learning, still a newbie. Any ideas on how to accomplish this why its on the trailer?

Scared the living @@@ out of me when I finally disconnected the trailer from the boat.

A picture of the complete winch stand from either side will get you a ton of recommendations!

Scared the living @@@ out of me when I finally disconnected the trailer from the boat.

Well, once you get the bow stop raised a bit - either by replacing the whole assembly or adjusting it, if possible. Then you can either refloat the boat or if you are the brave sort, lock up the brakes and try to slide the boat forward. (Don't try this until that strap is under the bow stop)

Take a closeup of the stand. You are to far away to make any heads or tails of your setup.Make sure you get the whole assembly in the picture because it looks to be two piece.From what i can tell or can't, it looks like something i have never seen before. Almost like homemade

ok will do sorry, this is the only one i have on my phone. Just bought the boat a week ago for $250, still need to decide if i want to try to restore it or not. Will take a closer picture tonight

The first bow stop that is attached to the cross over beam needs to be adjusted down to allow for the boat to come forward.
I would also look at the bunks or rollers (I can not tell from the pictures which one you have) to see if the boat is sitting properly, ours sits with the bunks holding the hull just under the chine.
And the transom should be just on the end of the bunks or rollers for support.

From that picture it looks like someone took the winch off the original post and then mounted that stupid angle extension so that they wouldn't get their feet wet. I suspect that you can remove the angle piece and mount the winch to that location.

I'll take a picture of the whole setup, hopefully I get home tonight before the daylight vanishes. I have a feeling this whole trailer set up is pieces put together. I want to get this thing safe, i was scared trailing this home last weekend went really slowly.

OK

Both of the stands on the trailer need to be cut off at the trailer frame
then go to this sight Bow Stops, Winches, and Winch Stands
and buy the proper size bow stand for the weight of your boat
then position the stand where you have around 10% of the total weight of boat and trailer on the hitch
When ajusting the bow stand the bow eye on the boat needs to fit snug under the bow roller

Captain zac is right on the money. You have no adjustment available in your current setup.

One thing I'm seeing in picture 002, clear to the left where the straight beam meets the cross beam, is something that looks like it is stopping the forward progress of the boat at that point. If the boat position on the trailer is satisfactory as is, I guess you could leave it there and position the new winch stand as needed. If you need to move the boat forward you will need to cut that piece off, too.

In case you don't know this, the new winch stand will be attached with u-bolts, not welded on, so you can move it as needed. Also will have vertical adjustment. Good luck.

Okay buoys and gulls. I'm the joker that asked the OP to submit some pictures so I guess it's time for my two cents.

All parties please review all the pictures. Note in 004 of post #13 the very short trailer tongue. In 001 thru 003 how far forward the hull is on the trailer. In 005 how much hull is aft of the bunks. In most of the pictures how diminutive the winch stand is compared to the bow.

I'm of the opinion that the OP either has too much boat for his trailer or not enough trailer for his boat !!!

I would like to see the GVW for the trailer, the weight of the boat and the tongue weight as the unit now sits.

And, sum'thin 'bout how the surge brake coupler is mounted in picture 004 don't seem right.

I'm of the opinion that you are absolutely right. That explains that funky winch setup; it was cobbled together to try to work for this boat. No way I would take this on the road.

The actuator is totally collapsed.
