I could use some help with adjusting the carb.

Here's a video of it running and what it's doing.

Any help would be great.

Re: Adjusting the carb on a 1953 Evinrude 15hp

The top needle is for the low speed. Slowly turn it clockwise until it "seats" or bottoms out, being careful not to damage the tip of the needle tightening it too much. Once seated, back it out 1.5 turns. Do the same with the bottom needle, or High Speed, but only back that one out 3/4 of a turn.

Now it is best to fine tune it on the lake, where there is proper backpressure on the exhaust.

Slowly turn the low speed needle in, clockwise, 1/8 of a turn or so at a time, giving it time to respond. Once it starts backfiring or wanting to die, turn it back out 1/4 turn. Within that last 1/4 turn is the ideal idle position.

Then take it for a high speed run, doing the same with the high speed needle, turning it in 1/8 of a turn or so at a time until it backfires or wants to die, then back it out 1/4 turn as well. Within that 1/4 turn is the ideal position.

Now reset the dials so that they are pointing straight up and down, vertical. This is for reference so that you know where they should be if they get moved.

Was the carb cleaned/rebuilt first? Is is sparking adequately, ie jumping a good 1/4" gap on an inline tester with a bright blue SNAP!! What is the compression? Are the fuel lines original/cracked?

Carb was cleaned and rebuilt.

Great spark on a spark tester.

Don't know the compression I'm asking around to some friends to see if I can borrow one.

Fuel lines on the motor were changed this morning. Line on tank was not. It holds pressure though.

Let us know if that helps.

BTW, are you running it in a barrel?

What plugs are you running? What is their condition?

I was wondering the same? Is it on a barrel? Leg half under water? If not you will fry the impeller pretty quick and eventually the engine without adequate cooling.

The lower end is not attached at this point. I'm waiting on a new impeller.

How much does the water cool the actual motor head?

Never mind. I just saw where the water goes into the head. Glad I didn't run it long

Crap. Stop doing that. You'll fry it. The entire powerhead is water cooled. Wait until you get the impeller installed and in a barrel before trying to adjust the carb.

Yep, education is never cheap. Glad this one didn't cost to much (at least not yet). It still turns over.

Thanks guys.

So can anyone tell me what's happening here. I got the motor back together. Had a hard time starting it. Had to use my 1/2 drill and a socket acting like a starter to get it to fire.

It finally did. But when I pulled the plugs out to check them, one was wet and the other was dry.

Why was that? Is that normal?

It looks like it's running way too rich. You can clean those up and re-use them. Running them at the proper mixture will clean them up too.

I love the video. LOL and your t-shirt.:D

Here's a video of it running or attempting to run. I'll work on adjusting the carb AGAIN.

if you can, set up a fan to blow the smoke away from the carb. it will help with getting it dialed in.

I'll move the fan and let you know. I'll also put the silencer back on.

You said the proper mixture. I'm running it @ 24:1. That's what I was told was proper. Was I told wrong?

cant say for sure but i believe you should run 16:1 in that motor.

Nahh, the 15's run at 24:1. 7.5's and smaller take the thicker 16:1 mix.

What I was refering to, was your low speed and high speed screws may be backed out to far, therefore allowing your motor to run too rich. You may also just need to change your plugs too. It looks like those have seen a bit of use.
