I am new to boating and have not fully understood the function of trimming the motor. Once I have left the dock I put it all the way down so my boat is not bouncing on the water, is this the right procedure?

Re: Adjusting trim

Well, usually you should be trimmed all the way down when you come off the trailer unless you're in really shallow water.

So unloading you're trimmed all the way down.

Now, once you've left the No-Wake area, you throttle forward and you should feel the boat come up on "plane". You'll learn to tell how this feels.

Now you should TRIM up a "little" to get a smoother ride. If you trim up too much, you'll start porpoising (bow bouncing on top of the water).

Here's a link that explains it real well: (Page 1 is Trim Tabs, Page 2 is Power Trim) - Pictures and everything... :)

Re: Adjusting trim

tuck all the way down is for taking off (hole shot) as you start to pickup speed and the bow drops, start to trim out until you get max speed. too far out you start to suck air and loose speed and water pickup for cooling. my boat when i come out of the hole, if i don't trim up, it pushes my bow down and it plows water, as i start to trim up, my bow comes up and the spray line move to the back of the boat. with this boat there is a 12 mph difference, between bad trim and good trim.

it's all an experiment, as each boat handles a little different.
