Hi guys, can you help?

Alpha 1 Gen 1 Sterndrive

Is this normal?

It's the first time I've replaced a Gimbal Bearing. It installed very easily, too easy, I just tapped the installation tool with a club hammer and it slid in easily. I took great trouble to make sure the grease holes aligned.

However, when greasing the bearing via the grease zirk, grease oozed out between the gimbal housing and the gimbal bearing outer ring, not a lot but every time I pumped the gun, more came out. I know some of you guys would have changed a Gimbal Bearing a thousand times so......

Is this normal or is there a problem?

Normal. You can turn it with your fingers and hit it a little more. That's why it is good to do it when the drive is off so you can see when it is full. If not you could wind up with the bellows full of grease.

The first photo does not show it seated fully.

Thanks for your replies guys. You know, you think you have done everything right, measured 1,000 times and cut once and all that, but then something comes along and bite's you, right were the sun don't shine....

Bt doctor, sorry for the mixup, the first picture was to show it was aligned with the grease hole.

This is how it ended up, fully home. As I was knocking it in there was a dull thud after each hit until it reached where I thought it should be. After that I hit it and got a sort of firm metallic sound as if it was fully home.

Eric, do you mean the bearing or the outer ring, cos the only thing I could turn with my fingers would be the bearing??

And are you saying that when it oozes out of the joint between the housing and the bearing outer ring, it's full?

Yes the inside bearing is rotated, just like it would be with the u-joint drive shaft thru it.

Yes, when you see grease squeeze out of the joint it is full. If you have the drive on when you grease it you won't be able to see when it is full, and can't tell by feel of the grease gun so you could keep pumping grease out of the bearing into the bellows.
