To get Navy Blue with the Ford Blue use Black but before you mix it pour the black into a separate container and add a bit of white to it to make a dark gray and then add it to the blue to darken it. I'd start with 1/2 cup of Blue and 2 tablespoons of gray and a tablespoon of Mineral Spirits and go from there.;)

If you want darker add black, lighter add white.

And yes you'll just have to play with it until you find the shade you like.

Thanks for stopping by Native! I would like to see the painted motor as well. This is stressful for me not being very versed in this world!

As always Wood thanks for the advice, and that is what I will do. I knew I needed to play around a bit, but minimizing the waste is always in the back of my mind.

It's been too long without any real forward progress. I have been trying to learn about this paint stuff and its doesn't come easy for me. I have been going through threads here and soaking it all in. I sprayed the primer back in august and ended up very thick in spots, so thick I could measure it with a tape measure.
No lie I think there was some of it about a 1/16th of an inch. Most of which I sanded off. I stopped on the way home from work quite often to get more sand paper.

Then I had to touch the primer up. Spray it on and sand it off.

So then I need to start thinking color and I knew I wanted a navy blue. I'm using the Majic brand from tractor supply and they only sell ford blue so i bought a quart of that with a quart of black and a quart of white. to mix a darker blue i took three plastic cups and three syringes from my sister who is an RN. I started with 10ml of ford blue in 2 of the cups and 12 in the 3rd. the first mixture was 10ml blue 4ml blk 1 ml white. the second i mixed 10 ml blue 4ml blk .5ml white. the third I mixed 12 ml blue 4ml blk and .5ml white I liked the third mixture the best, so i converted ml's to ounces and mixed up a quart.

sorry for the blurry pics

So lately I need to get this thing painted and I am leery of my spraying ability so I tried my hand with a roller and it didn't go well!!!! Ooopsy

So back to the sand paper.

Now I am practicing with the HVLP and will attempt to spray the color very soon!

We will keep trying!!!!!

Take Care!!!

It's all skill building little bit of practice, some test sprays, and I'm sure it'll look great.

If not well then you can get a bit more sanding experience.

I decided to try my luck with painting the prop today, so I mixed up 4oz of black. I used the hardener and the reducer that goes with the majic brand paint. the hardener i just put a couple tea spoons and the reducer i kept adding a little at a time until i had the consistence of skim milk. I am spraying the HF hvlp gun at 20 psi with a water filter and regulator at the gun. the gun has three adjustment. I started with all three wide open and did a test pattern on cardboard. i found the fan pattern was just too large for the small part i am painting so I turned that down about halfway. Don't know If that's correct or not but it seemed to work. Next I held the gun at about 10 or 12 inched from the card board and sprayed for a thousand two count. I then turned the paint volume screw in until the 2 count spray wouldn't run or sag. I found this worked pretty good.

first coat

second coat

after three coats i flipped it and gave it three coates on the other side with 5 or 10 minutes between coates. I couldn't be happier with the results so far!

It appears to be well covered and very glossy!

Prop looks great!

Thanks for the setup walk through I'll be needing that in the future. Since I see no home spray booth and nothing else in your pics looks covered in black can I assume that you had very little over spray? IE You think a feller could paint a boat with that gun in a garage and not worry about coloring everything in said garage?

The small size of the prop is the main reason you don't see over spray. If you shot a boats worth of paint, there would be over spray on everything...The insides of my temp booth were covered when I was done. I would recommend taking the time to at least cover anything that you don't want dusted the same color as your boat. JMHO.

TDF painting a whole boat is going to put a great deal more paint in the air. But if you have things that you don't want paint on I pick up sheets and blankets at resale shops for almost nothing plus I have a blue tarp collection that i cover things up with. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks NM and SBB, In my teens I helped my uncle when he painted a racecar and we made a knockdown booth from pvc pipe, plastic sheeting, and a box fan w/ a furnace filter. I had been planning to do the same but got excited seeing those pics and got to hoping that the HVLP had been the ticket to cutting down the overspray. Alas I guess a knockdown booth is still in my future.
