I realize this will probably open a can of worms......

It looks like I need to replace a cracked coil on my 83 Evinrude 50. iboats has CDI, Sierra and Mallory. Of course there is always OEM.

Is one brand recommended over the others?

I have had success with all the brands you list, sometimes the OEM part is not available to me when I need it and have to use the aftermarket.

JMHO but I'd go with the CDI.

cdi looks to me like a better built coil, but if you switch one coil to cdi, you have to switch all of them. At least that is what the website I was gonna order from said for my engine.

I use Sierra due to the warranty..... When you reassemble it make sure you assemble bolts and washers properly and do not overtighten as it will break the powdered core.....

Why?????????

I dont understand why you would need to replace all of the coils either. I would think each coil would work independently, but this is the note I get when ordering a cdi coil for my engine.

Note: This style coil must be used together with similar style coils. They can replace the old style coils, but all the coils on the motor must be replaced.
