Aftermarket Trim sending unit 1975 135HP?

Seems as though the internal portion of my trim sender is bad. Have continuity from gauge to ball. With sender installed, resistance at sender to ground varies between 5 and 40 ohms, but is not linear, so gauge moves up and down, and never reflects true position. A little up from full down might read 20 ohms, or 40 ohms, and a little down from full up might read 20 ohms or 40 ohms, and same thing anywhere in between, as well as either full up or down extremes. Resistance varies, but nothing like it should.

Is there an aftermarket assembly that can be installed instead of factory sender, which will work with current gauge (Teleflex for OMC)? Or, can an external sender from another model be modified or mounted somehow, to show correct trim position?

Also, along the same lines, just tested boat for first time (was stored for 15 years). 1972 20' Wellcraft (V20) center console. Tilt/Trim seem to work fine when still, but when underway, motor only seems to trim up a little, and no tilt while moving along at speed. Not that we need to tilt or trim much as bow still seems a little high with motor all the way down, but is that normal for no tilt at speed? Fluid level was full, but cycled and topped of anyway.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

If the sending unit that you speak of is the one in the trim cylinder (part 172574), ishopmarine.com still lists the part.

Thanks, but that is the good external 1/2 of the sending unit. It consists of insulated component that wire attached to, while other end has spring and ball. The ball rides on variable resistance inside the trim cylinder, and that internal variable resistance portion is the 1/2 the is bad. Requires replacing trim cylinder at about $250+ for the part. At least that's what I think from what I've read so far.

Thought a complete external unit might bolt on somehow?

OK I see it, part 172662 is the bobbin assembly. $180.

Did you call twin city and see if they might have a used one? tcoutboard.com phone 952.496.1951. They might have the whole cylinder part 172571.

If they don't have it ask them to refer you to some of the other salvage yards.

Maybe someone here can suggest something ???

Thanks for the part #'s and contact info!

Didn't call anybody yet for original, since Internet pricing turned me off OEM for this item. Was thinking that going with aftermarket or fully external from another make/model, (for hopefully under $50) would be a more permanent and cheaper solution than going with a used original style unit. Hate to spend much on a luxury item that basically I can simply look at to get similar results (did I adjust enough up/down?).

Basic complete sending type unit seems like it would be a very simply universal part, with adjustable mount bracket for various models?.?. Or, maybe one of the manufacturers uses a model that could be considered universal by the way it mounts. Something along these lines is what I was hoping for.

panthermarineproducts.com sells a universal lift gauge with a sender which is very versitile. I have one and it's a good quiality product - but I'm not using it for the same application that you are. YOu'd have to look at it and decide if it will work with your outboard. You might have to go OEM.

IBoats sells the set (gauge and sender) for around $125.- but they don't show the sender in their product description. The panthermarineproducts.com site shows the sender.

Thanks, that universal looks exactly like what I was looking for, except just bought a new set of gauges, and would like to use sender with the new Teleflex gauge.

Could you tell me what resistance is full up and full down? Looking for something like 8 ohm to 80 ohm I think.

Thanks,
Rob

I can't tell you off hand what the up and down resistance is. I'll try to find out. I can't get at the unit to measure because my boat is still in storage. - but go to the panthermarine.com website and you'll probably find ot- or if not, contact their technical assistance. When I bought mine years ago, I found their ta to be very good.

ezeke, still looking.

The universal that D. mentions is close to what I was thinking about, except don't need a gauge or the added expense of the gauge. Just a universal sender that I could modify to fit. Even if resistance is off a little, I can probably adjust that as well by adding resistance.

I'd suggest giving panther marine a call. I "seem to remember" (its been a while) that my original sender arrived damaged and they sent me a new one (I kept the original gauge). They might sell you a sender. I do remember calling them before I bought to ask some questions and they were very helpful.
