Re: AGM Batteries

I have had a Optima in my Land Rovers for years with no issues accept one warranty replacement. I have no plans on spending that kind of money on batteries for the boat though just doesn't seem beneficial or needed at this point.

Not busting your cajones here, but isnt that logic a bit backwards? You can always just get out of the truck, and walk away...but the boat quits in the middle of the lake and you are screwed. Seems to me they should be switched. Just sayin. :D

Iraq...US Military and DoS Civilians...2500+ armored vehicles (MRAPs, Hummvees, suburbans, LENCO F350s, etc...etc...) 140 degree+ ambient AIR temps...horrible roads...one name brand battery in EVERY vehicle - OPTIMA. Nuff Said.

Having done millions of dollars worth of work for the corp of engineers at Luke AFB and tons of work on our DoD accounts I can absolutely say the government doesn't buy the best stuff...They buy what they feel is the best American made stuff 3 years ago...We weren't allowed to install anything that wasn't made in the good ol' USA...Kinda funny when 700 American made hot water hoses for the fan coils at a dorm burst 3 days after start up...That was a $22,000 oops...

No problem:

I weigh out benefits as well as negatives & since my boat is being kept at a Marina & I always carry a Jump Box & I also plan on adding a 2nd battery I just don't see the real benefit as long as I test my batteries regularly. Optima Batts don't do anything all that spectacular that a good wet battery can't do but they do hold up without leaking in vehicle rollover accidents.

Not to say I wont change my mind in the future but for now no plans on AGMs for my boat with all the other toys & addons I want. Besides we are already looking at Express Cruisers seriously for the future.

Shhhhhh! You are not supposed to point out facts like that. You know that practicality and frugality have no place in a Gov't contract!

We all know the three main reasons there are Optimas on these vehicles 'in country' are:
1. Bulk Purchase Discount
2. Ease of shipping
3. Incentives to those making the decisions

Followed closely by the resistance to acid evaporation, and that facts that they can continue to operate when punctured and when the vehicle rolls over, then vibration resistance. They still kick butt, and the benefits are there. Whether they are worth it to you depends prolly more on your budget than which is actually a "better" battery.
