Ahead Only

Hello,

I fitted a new tilt motor to my Stringer 400/800 (not sure which, to be honest) today...only to discover, once it was finally down, that the steering is jammed straight ahead :(

Looking at my manual, I seem to have Tru-Course steering, which seems to consist mostly of cables and pulleys...

Is there anything obvious I can check before I strip the whole thing to pieces and see which bit of it has seized? The manual says there are two lubrication points in the "intermediate housing", which I assume means the mid-section of the leg, but the photo in the manual is so bad, I can't figure out where they mean.

The leg is a '77 Stringer 400 (or 800), but the engine is an '88 GMC originally fitted to a cobra outdrive.

Any help/advice will be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Paul

Right, I'm braving the rain today armed with spanners - any advice would be much appreciated, please :)

Re: Ahead Only

Hi,

thanks for replying :)

I had a good old look at it all today, but I decided not to start taking anything apart, as I couldn't make head nor tail of what the Seloc manual was trying to tell me.

It seems to me that the shaft which goes through the transom plate, from the tru-course pulley at the stern to a large-ish gear in the intermediate housing (which I assume does the steering) has jammed absolutely solid. The Seloc manual talks about there being two greasing points for this shaft, one inside and one outside the boat, but I can't make them out.

How heavy is the drive to just lift off? Do I need an engine-hoist or similar?

Again, thanks for your help,

Paul

He's making a joke. Bondo is a regular poster on the board and he just loves the old OMC stuff. ;) Actually, in truth he always warns people against them. I wish I could help with the steering problem, but at least I can explain other people's posts. :D
