I have a 96 5.7 mercruiser with an alpha one gen 2, i am just putting the motor back in. now we had the motor out a few months ago and went back in no issues and the alignment was right. well going back in today, we got it down and tightened the rear mounts and then set it on the front and checked it and it was way off. i lifted the front of the motor and to make it right you had to lift the front to where the top of the motor mount on the motor were flush with the top of the studs on the stringer. i know something is not right with it and it got late and i stopped messing with it. just trying to find ideas on what to check or look at tomorrow morning. and ideas?????

Re: alignment issue

Did you by any chance replace the rear mounts while it was out this last time? If you did, did you use new OEM mounts?

Re: alignment issue

no, as far as the mounts and the bellhousing or coupler cover or rear motor mount( what is that cover called??) it is new , but was put on the last time it was out and put back in and the alignment was done after that was installed. i am thinking it is maybe hanging up or maybe the double lock washer might be sitting on something it shouldnt, i didnt know if this might be a common mistake or something

Re: alignment issue

On mine, the new rear mounts were taller and did not require any of the metal washers. If the extra washer was put in, the alignment tool would not even start to go into the coupler.

The only thing I can think of is the gimbal bearing got out of alignment and you're trying to align the engine to a badly positioned gimbal. Don't take much.

Look at the bottom of the bushing, if it`s smooth then it`s old style, if it has ridges, it`s new style.

Hopefully it's not too bad at the shop. If you have the new style bushing with the flat washer or double lock washer you might be too high in the rear. It still does not explain it being good the one time bad the next...
