Hi all!

I have a shift problem with my 5.0 Mercruiser / Alhpa1

I have been reading and reading. My lower shift cable went Kaput... I replaced the cable. Shifting fine now. However, the PO fixed the "symptom" and not the cure by clipping the Shift Interrupt to Coil wire. I have read the posts on the Shift Interrupt switch and understand how it works and the like.

After replacing the lower shift cable, I made the adjustment of travel to 6 inches as required. Shifts just fine. She drops into F and R with ease... Just in F to Neutral is the problem. I have to shut down the engine to get out of F. Makes for an interesting time getting docked :( .

I spliced in new wire to the clipped wire. In the driveway on muffs, it iwll not start in gear as designed. However when I splashed her late yesterday, it stalled when I put it in F.

I clilpped the wire again and it started and motored in F / R just fine.

Bad upper cable? I had the Mrs. move the throttle and it doesn't bind.

Any and all help is much appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Jeff

Re: Alpha 1 shift issue

Sounds like the adjustment of the switch itself. It shouldn't cut the ignition until the roller is 1/8" from the centre of the interrupter cam. I'll try and dig up the adjustment procedure and post it here....

Re: Alpha 1 shift issue

Just to let you all know, I was able to correct the shift interrupt issue I had been experiencing.

After reattaching teh SI wire for the 2nd time, I noticed some chafing... I have no idea where it came from. However, I removed the bad, spliced in some new wire and lake tested yesterday.

All I can say is YAY!!!! I have neutral now!!! Dogs disengage and no more panic when docking!!!

Thanks for the pointers!!

Ran all day yesterday with no problems.

As a power note... I tested WOT and hit 4200 rpms and ran 42 MPH with a 19 SS prop!! Satisfied with the top end speed now.

All done!!! Now... for the interior woes... Last winter, I replaced the floor stringers as suggested... Looking for A couple of Helm chairs with bases and a couple of Jump Seats!!

Happy Boating!!!
