Re: Alpha 1 still not engaging reverse!!!

I see some rust around the gimbal bearing, but what I did notice is the wheel on the arm really dosent look that good, and the shift slide appears to have a "rounded area in the fork" .A lot of salt corrosion at the brass nut for the shift cable. If that nut was not seated all the way when it was installed, it could affect the reverse adjustments.
Post the pics of the shoe in fwd and reverse. thinking the 10:00 should be more like 10:30
you did say that with the cable disconnected ,the slide bottoms out with a "clank" in the housing. metal hitting metal?

Yes it did. The thing that bugs me is that reverse was working just perfect before I took the drive out the first time..
I will post pics of the lower unit shift foot in the morning.

Re: Alpha 1 still not engaging reverse!!!

Ok, so i messed with it today a bit more since I i straightened the shoe and foot, and put back everything with a new bell house gasket, water intake o ring, and made sure to use a 3m weatherstrip gasket sealer on the u joint o ring, and the the gasket. I was able to engage reverse manually with the motor on, but it won't engage via the cable itself. Frustrated at this point, and with gorgeous weather, water temp at 85 deg, i could not resist. I took it to the water with wife and kids. After a few laps of just fwd motion, we decided to go back to the docks and buy some bait, when I got the urge to trow in reverse and to my surprise, in engaged!!! Now I believe it might a little fine tuning to the shift cable, but I think problem solved itself. One thing that it did though was after a while of riding around, we went to leave, fwd would engage, but if I tried to give it some throttle from the hole, motor would stall. We travelled a good 600 yards just on idle in fwd, and when approacing the dock, I tried again, and it responded fine reving up....what is this symptom of?

It sounds like the ignition cut-out switch which aids shifting is engaging incorrectly due to a sticky lower shift cable.

Looks like I put my foot squarely in my mouth there--sorry to mislead

the shift interrupt switch, if engaging improperly would kill the ingintion when shifting, not when trying to accelerate

to op: when was the last full tune-up??

Sounds like too much cable travel in forward, not enough for reverse. Did you do the 'turn the barrel 4 rotations back' when you finished the adjustment?

Does it actually stall, or just bog down? Many times that's related to a timing issue, or a carb that wants to be rebuilt.

I think if it was a shifting or shift interrupter problem, what you would notice is when going from neutral to reverse, or to forward, the engine would stall.

Either way, your boat is telling you that it needs some TLC. I would just assume the previous owner lied about how he took care of it, and just start doing routine maintenance, like a tune up, filters change, oil change, and maybe even a carb rebuild. Also I would just run 100% gas in it, no ethanol. Next time you have trouble with throttle from the hole, see if you can ease the throttle up. That probably doesn't tell much, but at least it gets your boat running a little faster back to the dock LOL.

Jerry, it actually stalled, and it didnt matter if I throttled up quickly, or tried slowly, it would do it anyways. I have done a few oil changes since I bought, I do need to start looking at rebuilding the carb.
