I have an alpha 1 gen 2.
I would like to replace the seal under the waterpump but this seal assembly does not look like the one in the parts maual when pulled up by serial number, they are similer.

The one in the unit has two tabs with holes in them. The holes alow the seal carer to be bolted to the lower unit.

I am trying to understand why this part is different, what part I need.

I had the part pulled up at a parts suplyer by the serial number. The piece they wanted to give me is different than mine.

Not sure what you are referring to, that carrier is not bolted in any of the versions. Do you have a picture of what you have?

Drive serial number is OF175992 on the upper.

The seal has the numbers PA-6 33G and 840836 on it.

Is there a number on the lower and if so where is this number?

Thanks
Chris

Ayuh,... Me neither,... Wonder if it's some sorta short lived design change....

The 1s I see are just a resistence fit,....
I'm thinkin' Merc decided the retaining bolts are Unneeded....

Found it, the problem is, you don't have an Alpha I Gen II lower unit, you have a lower for an outboard.
It can not be used as an outdrive lower unit, only the lower unit for an outboard.
Was this an ebay/CL type purchase as a replacement lower?

That is strange.

I know it will work as the lower unit has been in use by me for the past 4 years.

I purchased the boat from the original owner who gave me a pile of recites and a log including when he checked the motor oil level for the boat. I am pretty sure this is the original unit unless a mechanic switched the unit without telling the previous owner or the previous owner lied to me.

Take another picture of the whole top of the lower unit, and remove the rag. There should be a hole there for the oil passage. Is there a vent plug on the upper, port side of the lower unit?

google pulls the 1623-815822 number up on several sites as an Alpha Gen II lower (minus the C1)

weird
I can't imagine aftermarket companies being so bold as to put that number in the casting, but who knows... Mallory maybe?

I'm also curious about the lube hole / quad seal between upper and lower

I have posted the requested picture.

I found the bearing carrier is used on a number of Outdrive units and the two seals part number 66302 were used along with one O-ring number 90011.

Further I found several alpha 1 gen 2 use the same seal and O-ring.
eg a Mercury Marine : ALPHA ONE (GEN.II) 1996-1997 0F680000 THRU 0K999999 (MERCRUISER)

I am hoping I can put these seals in mycarrier and It would work.

If anyone has any thoughts I would be interested.
