Re: Alpha one shift problem

I'm not Bond-o, but you do not need, nor do you want, any sealant - much less RTV - on the bell housing gasket. It goes on dry. Now that you have the bell housing off, you can get to work at getting the brass part out. ;)

Oh yeah - on the hose. Be sure to get the right OEM hose. Forget trying heater hose or anything like that. Make sure it is the right length when re-installing as well.

Re: Alpha one shift problem

Just got back from the bend over and take it like a man store, I had to get my phone out and go to this website to show them what hose I needed(got to love the 16yr old pimple boy behind the parts counter). Got what I need now. Am I going to want to come in from behind the brass cable with the drill, or from the front, or am I going about this wrong??

Maybe try a metric 12 point socket that is a little small to tap onto the rounded brass before drilling. I have used that technique for successfully removing a stripped bolt. Just be careful not to damage the housing!

Next problem, pimple boy sold me wrong hose, its about 3in to short, I took it back, and looked on his parts breakdown, typed in the # on the hose, and told me they dont make it any more, then proceeded to tell me I could go to napa and use a reinforced hose that they sell in bulk. What to do now??

Well, I assume by "bulk hose" he is referring to heater hose. No, that will not work without kinking and causing problems.

Re: Alpha one shift problem

Good day all, well after easter lunch I got back at the boat, so far everything that is supposed to be hard, has come off easier than expected, the easy part of removing the threaded shift cable shaft from the bellhousing has still got me beat, I have it cut off and ready to go to work tomorrow. I had to order the cooling hose, and I noticed some stripped wires for the trim sensors, so I ordered those also. One question though, If the motor wasnt moved, do I still have to align the bearing to the motor??

Ayuh,... If you replaced the gimbel bearing, yes, it has to be initially aligned....

I have a small marine mechanic down the road from me, I,m hoping he has the tool that I can borrow. How to you go about aligning it, is it all done with the motor mnts, or do you whack the tool?? I'm sure there is a link on here somewhere, correct?

Re: Alpha one shift problem

Ok, I got a alignment tool made at work, and my hose and trim sensors should be here today, my next question is this. I have seen on other posts of people using there old gimbal bearing to seat the new one, what are everyones feelings on this?? I dont want to screw anything up now. The shift cable brass is still in the bellhousing, I,m taking it to work today. Thanks all.

Re: Alpha one shift problem

Got everything all put back together yesterday, everthing went very well, new shift cable is so smooooth, I kept bumping the prop, and knocking it out of gear, so I got out the duct tape, worked perfect. I want to thank everone for the help/advice, I'm glad I did it myself. Now onto all the next projects. (new marine fuel pump, alt, distributor). Anyone have link to a wire diagram for hooking up a distributor??

sounds like you need the proper OEM manual for your engine

if you start a new thread and include the engine make/model/serial number and ask nicely someone may post a link for you to download a manual

or just do a quick search of the forums and see if you can find the already posted link in another thread

DO NOT use a seloc or clymer manual for anything besides starting fires

Re: Alpha one shift problem

The problem with using a motor manual is the motor is a built 1968 327 truck engine.

Ayuh,... I use a bungee cord, run from the anti-cav plate, around the prop, back to the plate...

It depends on the distributer you choose...

Re: Alpha one shift problem

The distributor is a mallory marine breakerless distributor YLM520CV 3 wire. The other question I had was on the shift cable bellows, on the small end, do you use bellows adhesive, and when you put the clamp on, do you do so with the leg in the full up position? I could not find a reference to this is any instructions.
