Alternator Question...

I didn't see this anywhere posted already so just a quick question you boating mechanics can probably answer in a jiffy. The alternator went out on my 1986 Mercruiser 260 5.7L V-8 serial number 6902611. Is there any reason I can't pick up a new alternator from Autozone and put that in to replace the current one?

Thanks,

Chris

No offense intended, but you must not have searched too long ... the whole "automobile versus marine parts" issue has been bounced around here recently in almost every post it seems.

For safety reasons, you need to install another marine alternator. You can usually pick one up through your NAPA dealer, but I doubt you can through the local Autozone. Either that, or take your current alternator to a reputable local rebuilder and have then rebuild it. Be sure they are familiar with marine alternators. Good luck!
