Can anyone tell me a "cheap", or at least "reasonably" priced place to pick up a piece of "marine grade" aluminum, (#5356 ?)3/8" thick? I'm looking for a piece 12"x16".
I live in a pretty small town and I almost PASSED out when they told me what it would cost...$157!!!! I asked if they understood I was after 12 INCHES by 16 INCHES, not feet!

I'm having a plate welded on my transom so I can mount a kicker bracket for my small motor.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Aluminum plate

That 3/8 piece of stock is what's killing you. Not someting ,anyone ,anywhere is going to have laying around. Why can't you use a sandwich of thinner stock ,bolted together to accomplish what you need to do?

BBogey -- I noticed you live in Washington state. I forget the town but there's a place where Boeing sells off surplus stuff. You can pick up a 4'x8' sheet for about that. It's amazing what they have. There's a guy here in town that stocks it but the freight alone would be a bunch.

Good luck!

BBogey

Don't know where here in Washington you live but 3/8" marine aluminum is available in Seattle, Clarkston and any other town where aluminum river boats are manufactured. There are also several boat manufacturers in Oregon.
That would just be a scrap piece from one of them.

****

Re: Aluminum plate

BBogey

Here is a link of a place that sells metal.
I've used them before and they're pretty good. http://www.onlinemetals.com/index.cfm?partnerid=26

I have a lathe in my garage and I make my own parts (when I feel it is within my ability), so I'm always looking for strange size pieces of metal.

Have you considered Stainless Steel?? If weight is not a concern, you may be able to find SS cheaper than Aluminum Plate.

Local will always be cheaper, but you said you exhausted that route.

Nav

Re: Aluminum plate

Hi Bbogey
I have a plate. 1/2 thick 12 "inches" by 25 "inches". Its hard to read but I think it says Re 6061-1651 00-A-2501 Alcoa. Don't know if it's marine grade but it's for a transom built for a drag boat. This was one of those times your suppose to measure twice cut once. let me know if your intrested

Re: Aluminum plate

Are you stuck on the idea of 5386? If not there is a pretty good listing of 6061-T6 on e-bay. I have some welded on my 5086 aluminum boat exterior below waterline (salt) without any problem (not ideal due to the small % of copper), but 5086 channel is nearly impossible to find. Search for "aluminum 6061". Good Luck

Re: Aluminum plate

Hey Guys,

THANKS a bunch for all the ideas! I'm only saying the #5356 because the guy that's going to weld it on my boat was saying that type would be the "best", but not the only route to go. I'd love to say I knew squat about any of this, but I don't!

I live in Central Washington (Ellensburg) I talked with a guy today that has a lead on a piece of this and is supposed to let me know tomorrow?

Cootie, thanks man, I may be getting back to you!

I just don't feel right going out in the Columbia River without a kicker, even though my big motor is new...

Navigator, I'm also going to your site now.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate it!

LOL, who'd of thought...I checked out e-Bay and sent that guy an e-mail! Maybe "e-Bay" won't be a 4-letter word in my house after all!
:D
