Re: Am I Going to Kill Someone?
jt-
jm, imo, makes a good point. that u have the lower eyelet at a 90-degree angle to the load in the line suggests it has little holding power once the load shifts fast and hard. if it were mine, and i wanted to do as you have, [a good idea, imo] i would weld a lower upside down U-bracket to flat area and put eyelet then in tension, vs the side load as u have it structured now. or in any event, have that safety line in tension somehow. not side loaded.
on sam's winch. it does look nasty, but it is just a mechanical device. so if its integrity is sound, not worn out cogs, frayed cable, springs or latches, i would consider servicing it. oils, grease and antiseize as applicable. derust it with auto derust solution avail at any auto parts such as autozone. then once black u can paint black, silver or gray. also naval jelly will remove the rust fine and leave it gray. follow instructions.
i would keep the contact point of bow hook to cable lubed with a spot of antiseize. drop or two oil. i said drop or two.

id do that every time out. if leaf springs service them and lube.
if u opt for a new winch wal-mart was mentioned as a source. i happened by there last weekend as i needed a new 1 7/8 ball. the new winch was $29.95. i took the time to read all the small print tips, too for ball. so be sure upper cup on trailer hitch is lubed as well. in fact, it is my opinion, that for maximum service... all rolling, sliding or rubbing metal items should get routine lube.
my trailer comes with wheel buddy bearings. they sound good in theory. so i looked them up. if interested:

my trailer-i plan to go over all rolling, sliding parts in early next yr... with a lube program

i keep a small machinists oiling can and a small tube of anti seize handy on my shelf... with both tooth pics and Qtips for a variety of application needs. a used toothpick chewed on after its used... is the best for antiseize and the crushed wooded fibers makes a great "brush". i usually toss it out after each use. this allows me to not to have to use my finger for application. [ICK!!... grease!!

i am adding a transom saver as well.
