Am I missing reed valves?

Me again with the non-running 57 seahorse.

I pulled the carb to clean it again as it stillwont run despite new plugs, coils, points, condensor, wires and carb rebuild X 2. I made sure the crank key is intact and that the flywheel is torqued.

I took the carb off and looked in the intake hole only to see a machined aluminum looking plate. There are 4 holes there. There is some solid looking material in the holes that do not open or shut when I pull the rope. I sprayed carb cleaner in the intake as a ersatz starting fluid and it wont fire. Do I have reed valves in here?

The coil packs and crank cam were missing when I got the motor.

FHB, you are looking right at the reed valves. I don't know what is wrong with your motor, but it isn't that.

Compression is about 80 in both cylinders (pull start) using an ancient compression tester Dad bought when I was working on his 72 VW bug.

I 'll go to Autozone and see if they have a spark tester.

There is no doubt some small problemm staring me in the face that I am missing. A friends father, who built race boat motors, is going to look at it next weekend.

Yea, I was able to see reed valves too, just like F_R stated. Did you by chance replace the spark plug leads, when you changed the coils? Often times, when people change coils, they dont replace the leads and the problems still persist. If you find that your spark plug leads are good, it's best to trim off 3/8" of an inch off and reconnect them to the coils. Trim off 1/4" on the boot side and these two tricks will offer a fresh new connection in both ends of the spark plug lead. This will also involve removing the armeture plate and undoing all the hold downs for the spark plug leads, to make things work. Also, make sure the coils are perfectly set, to the machined surfaces on the mag plate. The face of the coils should line up perfectly, preferrably using a utility knife blade to line them up. NO AIR GAP ON THE TOP OR BOTTOM OF THE COIL FACE.

Settings on the carb should be 1 1/2 turns out on the low speed and 3/4 turn out on the high speed. These carbs should not need to be rebuilt a second time. They're very responsive carbs on the OMC twins and very little goes wrong with them, by my experience. If they sit for a long time and shellac developes in them, that's the usual problem child, but if they're clean inside, then there's no reason they won't work.
