Re: Am I missing something?

Well, I just got to the forum and what we all expected unfortunatly happened! Most people never really listen, Im just glad like everyone else that he is still with us!! I suppose the adrenalin rush will keep him awake most of the night and he will have lots of time to think about how fortunate he is!

Now you know that about 70 is the best top speed for your boat (learned the hard way) You can allways tell your freinds that your boat will do 78MPH, but only once!!

The chine walk condition was likly caused by the motor being too high (jack plate), What happened was the boat had enough power to literally lift your boat completly out of the water and then it started tipping from side to side IE, Chine walk! The chines are the outside leading edges of the rear of the hull!

Dont forget to say your prayers tonight and thank God that you are still with us!

Lesson learned?????

Hasbeen

Re: Am I missing something?

Theres two kinds of boat racers (substitute boaters who wanna jam the throttle with 0 experience in a given boat if you like) -- those that have been wet and those that are gonna get wet.

If youve never driven a pad bottom boat heed the excellent advise given. And remember -- do you trust this guys rigging ability with your life?

Be careful!!
Welcome to the world of pad bottom boats.

OK Class...Pay attention, for our first lesson we are gonna study "Chine Walk AKA Chine lets beat the sh*t out of you,and destroy your new boat!!"
If you type the lesson plan in the search engine (Iboats Search) it should reveal several pages of good reading. This will be a good place to start, and also help you understand what was happening. Then afterwards we will move on to practical application of what we have studyed. Happy reading. :)

Re: Am I missing something?

I suppose eventually he will get back with us! I feel sometimes that I could have been more specific about things but he was in such a hurry to find out how fast the boat would go I doubt that it would have done any good! We all tried to tell him to take it slow! I laughed my tail off at what CHARLESW said, he deffinatly had balls!!

People that have not spent a lot of time on the water and around different types of boats just do not understand whats involved going 70+ MPH on the water!

Hasbeen

Re: Am I missing something?

suzuki40 -- please dont get the idea we are putting you down or trying to make you feel bad. Personaly I've seen what can happen. I've been racing with the guy who never came back to the ramp. I've helped friends get their boat ready to race and watched them leave the dock -- and never saw them again. And this was at events that were sanctioned with medical personel, safty inspectors, divers, helicopters, rescue boats and ambulances. These were professional folks who knew exactly what they were doing and had many years experiance doing it.

To be honest, chine walking is one of the least dangerous things that can, and will happen. If you think that was bad, wait til you experience a true "blowout".

Remember what I said about getting wet. Be careful. Keep in mind that when you are out there learning how your new boat reacts, its not like a sanctioned event where trained professional people are standing by to help.

I know you said you took your jacket (was it at least a 100 mph impact jacket?), were you wearing it? How about the kill switch lanyard, were you wearing it?

Re: Am I missing something?

Hello all, I thank you for all of the comment to me being stupid. Your right all I wanted to do was see how fast this boat would go. I found out the hard way. yes, I had the time of my life and I cant wait to do it again. Just the next time im going to know what im doing.
I have only one question thats bugging me? why did the chine walk happen on the last pass I made? why didnt it happen the first few times I done it? I can tell you one thing though, there is alot more in this motor than I have squeezed out of it. Does me sitting to one side of the boat cause the chine walk?.

Suzuki40

Re: Am I missing something?

Man...you are one lucky, lucky dude.

I can't help but saying that if that ever happened to me, I'd be putting some sort of restrictor plate on my throttle to prevent me from getting past 70 mph. Thank God noone else was with you. You might be regretting that last pass for the rest of your life.

Why it happened on the last pass vs the others will probably be a mistery. I'm thinking that the problem exist because of aerodynamics...or the lack there of. As was mentioned earlier, your boat was trying the fly and its not made for that. Maybe the last pass caught a little wind differently than the passes prior.

I'll leave you with one last question: Why do you want to go so, so fast?

Safe Boating...and jealous you got such a great deal.

Re: Am I missing something?

Hey, welcome back!! Get much sleep last night?

Just had to razz ya some!!

The question is, DID YOU REALLY LEARN YOUR LESSON???

I tried to include everything I could think of when I tried to walk you through setting up your boat, You can always think of things you should have said after the fact! I really didnt think you would get that much past 70! 70 seems to be a magic # for bass boats as anything past that requires being very very carefull and any changes to be made in very small incriments! My personal thought as to what happened on that last pass was that you may have raised the motor too high too fast! Dont get me wrong on this one as I really do not see it necesary for you to go faster, but after full trim and you are up to 70, you need to just bump the jack plate a little at a time and see what the reaction is going to be! As you approch being too high the boat will chine walk very slightly and you know its time to back off!

OK, Now I am going to get replies telling me that I am inabling you to go out and kill yourself the next time! I know you are going to try it again so I want you to do it right! Does that mean I am telling you to do it? No, actually I would tell you 70 MPH is fast enough! I really believe your boat was trying to tell you that it doesn want to fly! Thats why its called a bass boat and not a bass plane!!

Have fun with your new boat, but dont let us read about you in the paper!!

70 MPH REALLY IS FAST ENOUGH!!!

Hasbeen

Re: Am I missing something?

Hello all, I just got in tonight, and I had a blast!!! I know im a speed freak. but, My buddy that workd for kens marine boat shop, came out today to see what could caused the chine walk. He told me the motor was too high and that very well could have caused it. Well, after about an hour of watching my boat go up and down the lake without me. He finaly came to shore and said he has it set. He took me out and explained what to do at speed to tweek a little more out of it without over doing it. I did get some fishing in today, but I am just amazed at the speed this boat will go...Im just a tick uder 80. it will do 79MPH and that it, no faster? It is now very comfortable and im alot more confident in the set up and handling of the boat. Im getting pretty good at it now. One thing about this is, It drinks gas like its going out of style. I love it to death, but like my wife said..."Its going to get me killed" and I believe her. Thats why im thinking of traiding it for a 16' lowe semi-v with a 50 hp mariner? either way I wont lose out on the deal, I just wont be able to fly at will. what would you do?

Suzuki40

Re: Am I missing something?

Glad you got someone to give you a little one on one! Whew, thats one fast boat!!! As to the fuel consumption, just because the boat will do 79MPH doent mean you have to run around at WOT all the time! You will find that it will use half the fuel at 40 as it does at almost eighty! You know that lever on the right side of the boat that puts it in gear, well it will function at speeds in between also, try it youll like it!!!

Hasbeen

Re: Am I missing something?

Suzuki40
..i prolly would have done the same as you, even knowing better and having experienced the same thing before. A mans gotta know his limitaions. Now you know.....from now on how about cruising around 3/4 throttle. Pad boats can be scary and u need to be very careful turning/manuvering. That is one helluva deal you got on one helluva boat. If you trade down i will GLADLY give you what you paid for her!!
I had a buddy with a allison craft drag boat with a tall 6 merc running alcohol. it would do 115....i never rode with him again, it was fun but just isnt worth it.

Funny- jacking up help walking on my boat...
maybe your thinking of trim.

Dhadley is right - if you thought that was fun then you'll love blowout. A sudden 90 degree left turn at 80 must be just like a six flags river ride, except you get wetter. Don't forget the life jacket. I say keep the boat just make sure it has good floatation (makes it easier to recover).

Re: Am I missing something?

SORRYDOG:

I thought about your post about your boat doing better by jacking your motor up and I have to agree that it makes sence! It would seem that lowering the pad in the water more would help! I mostly was addressing making corrections to fast and not really knowing what was what! I made that statement as the last boat I helped set up was worse at high jackplate adjustment! Different strokes for different boats!! Sounds like he has a handle on it now though! I just hope he understands that you have to drive the boat differently under different water conditions! Like driving your car on gravel compaired to pavement, or if the roads are wet! At those speeds you can never stop giving the feel of the boat your complete attention!

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET??

Hasbeen
