I had posted, back in 2003, about a 1990 Evinrude 150 XP with a fast idle. We did everything we could to get it down. A couple of months ago we finally had a chance to get it worked on.

The mechanic said it took them two weeks to figure out why it was idling so fast. He finally took the flywheel off and discovered one of the magnets had a tiny crack in it, and that was advancing the timing just enough that the engine wouldn't idle below 1400rpm.

It now idles at 850 no load, and 600 with a load. It actually dies sometimes because it's idling so slow. That's a wonderful sound, vs. the "clunk" we used to hear when we'd put it in gear at 1400rpm.

For those that rememeber, just thought I'd update you!

That took some great troubleshooting and supplied us all with an item to remember, WITF.

Thanks for posting it, and my congratulations to the wrench who figured it out.

I know, he's good, and what's best, he's about a mile and a half from our camp in the boonies! He only charged us for 4 hours of labor!!! He said no way can I charge you for all the labor I put into this as it would be more than the engine is worth, 4 hours at 60 an hour! Tell me if that's a one in a million mechanic!
