Re: ...and she's finally in the driveway!

Yeah, they were doing some construction on the highway, so what should have taken slightly under an hour took almost two.

But, we had a good time, anyhow. And the boat ran relatively good, although I did encounter a few issues.

The first time out, the thing started right up and ran like a top the entire day. I do notice a little hesitation when I first hit the throttle, but I'm guessing (hoping) it is the transmission engaging. I have the Volvo drive, and I've heard that it engages some kind of cone system, instead of just gears that clunk together.

When I first hit the throttle it will fire up a bit then hesitate about a second then it'll fly right through the RPMs. Anyone know if that's a normal thing?

Also, I looked for the speedo hole to see if there might be any debris and promptly realized I have NO IDEA where that'd be. ;)

Oh, and one of the screws in the latch that holds down my swim deck (and the motor housing) was apparently stripped from the factory. I initially tried to fix it by drilling out the swim deck a bit and using one of those plastic sheetrock anchors. That held for about, oh 2 hrs, until I was driving down the road, looked in the mirror and saw that it not only ripped that screw back out, but the other as well and the platform was flapping in the wind on the trailer.

So, Saturday night I took the entire platform off, drilled the holes out a little bit, cut a piece of dowel to fit, put some waterproof wood glue in the hole and jammed the wooden dowel in there...then I waited a day for it to dry, drilled the hole out a little small and reattached the latch. Good as new... which is good, considering the boat IS new. DURP! ;)

We get to the Bordentown dock and there is no girl there selling passes. There is, however, a city cop there. I realize I forgot my registration card at home. Strike 1.

Jay, my neighbor, goes to talk to the cop and the cop comes walking over. He says there's nobody there to sell us the ticket, but he'd gladly run to the police station and pick it up for us. I tell him about the registration and he laughs and points to the front of the boat.

"It's right there on your boat."

Not sure of the law where you boat, but around here, they do require you to have a copy of your registration with you, so your initial reaction, if in La., would have been correct. I would double check for your area as the local cop may not be completely versed in boating laws.

Good to hear your shakedown cruise went reasonably well.

I'm not a big fan of this repair. This isn't below the water line is it? I would much rather you have used MarineTex or at least 5200. I just don't want to see you take on water and damage your new boat. I think I'd have the dealer address it and then guarantee the repair.

This is WELL above the water line. This is the below latch:

I said swim platform, but I actually meant sundeck.

I think my fix will work out well, but I spoke with the dealer and he said that if this fails, they'll order me a whole new deck. Just seems like a stupid thing to have made it past the factory, as that is like a big parachute if it is unlatched and it also holds the engine housing down.

I have a 08 Reinell with 5.0 and Volvo SX. My speedo work on and off, and I don't know where the sender is either. Not like the old days - hangin down off the transom.

I spoke to the dealer and he said that the little hole for the speedo is directly opposite the prop on the volvo drive. Basically it's just a little hole that water is forced into. As the water is forced in harder, the speedo reads higher. Apparently they are pretty prone to debris, though, and I know the river I boated on this weekend was FILLED with debris...guess it's just 'that time of year'.

Yep, I just found it on page 146 of the manual in the adults only section ( wow! reading who knew?)

Out of curiosity, how did you know which SX manual to look up? There seems to be like 4 or 5 of them.

Beautiful boat!! I love my Monterey :)

Be careful using the Bordentown ramp. It can become unusable during low tide. I live a lot closer to that ramp (I live in Yardville), but I drive the extra 10 minutes to Florence. It's only $50 for the year, ok to use at low tide, it's well lit at night, and the best part is that it's rarely used.

I also avoid the Delaware for a few days anytime after it rains. Too dirty. And don't even think about going down around Philly!!

I know that mine is a SX-A
by the way - Love that color. My old boat was orange and the wife hated it.

We've always had pretty good luck there...I pulled the boat out on Saturday at low tide and it wasn't so bad. I did drop the trailer off the edge, but before we put the boat on, I just pulled it to the edge of the dropoff, then pulled the boat right on.

$125 for the year...wish I would have known about that before last week! ;)

Residents of Bordentown get the ramp usage for $65, but us in state out of Bordentown folk pay $125. Grrr....nothing's cheap in NJ!

What is registration cost? California is $20 for 2 years on the boat & $15 for 5 years on the trailer.

Wow! That's some story! I liked the way you told it. My heart was actually pumping hard reading it. LOL. That's just the kind of thing that would happen to me.

Congrats on the exam and congrats on escaping the legal mayhem.

You know, I'm not really sure what the registration costs were. I had to pay them alongside the taxes for the initial boat purchase, so the whole deal came to around $1500...hopefully that won't be the norm. ;)

Seems like a great dealership if that's his initial response to the problem. Kudos to them (and I assume Monterey) as they appear willing to stand behind their products.

Yeah, so far so good. The guy was actually the reason I bought the boat. You know how some people just seem like they're trustworthy. Bryan at East Coast Marine Services...highly recommended!
