yes and from the time you leave home to the time you get back, including time in the store to get the battery, you have spent 30 minutes. That's my point. The whole job is not the < 5 minute part.

Wow - a 100% beatdown on poor ol rillman. :)

Myself I'm starting to think I really got the old helix-wrapped fastener treatment. In my neck of the woods the cost is about $16-$18 foot for a hefty $320 on a 17 foot boat (which they kindly rounded up to 18 - engine I guess...).

My challenge was finding a place that would break the cost out of a combo engine winterization and shrink wrap job. Guys were turning down the wrap job because I wouldn't let them touch the engine? I have also had equal trouble in the past getting a marina to "just store" the boat without insisting they do a winterization on the engine. The last real marina I used several years ago went ahead and re-winterized the engine after they promised to not touch it, then had the gall to charge for the work, suggesting they were just protecting me from myself and potentially poor diy skills. Ba-bye!

Anyway, I digress. I'd love to learn how to do this shrink myself and have also watched the many online vids about it. I've got zero heat gun experience except for the time I heated up a punched in corner of my vehicle's (unpainted) bumper and worked it back out. The thought of using an actual open flame around a plastic boat full of gas kinda gives me the willies.

$20 for the wrap (1/4 of roll) & 2 hrs labor @$20/hr (being generous) is $60. A DIY'r & someone who's been a customer for 8 yrs would probably think it a high price. Marinas are generally much higher than anyone for anything as already mentioned - off-season, taxes etc.

However if the marina owner had said: "our normal price is $275 but since you've been here for many years, we'll give you $25 off." Would you have gone for it?

What planet do you live on that has an hourly marina labor rate of $20? Average is $90 - $115. Unless you want a 16 year old with no experience doing it, you won't find anyone (in America or another non-3rd world country) to do anything on a boat for $20.

As for the OP, one word comes to mind based on his post and his career: HYPOCRITE

Just sayin'

I don't know if you can use the hot air heat gun instead of flame, but either one, I'd worry about overheating and affecting the hull under the shrink wrap. There's often a lot more to a DIY job than meets the unprofessional eye.

good for you rhillman.

upmarking goods is not screwing someone. if it was, then every retail establishment would be screwing everyone, which may be a matter of debate.

i have more time than money, still not much of either, so i'm happy for you.

lol....some funny reply s here.

don pegged it......

but another thing fyi......the tape used to shrink a boat is very expensive........10 bux a roll for 2 inch.....and more for the perimeter 4 inch....now we have to add vents....
that is time and money.

I bet the liability insurance for the marina is a bit pricey due to using a flame on plastic that is covering a very flammable object. Its the price of doing business, and business owners have to eat as well.

You guys are missing the real point: It's all relative! Did you ever notice that no matter who you are driving with, people that are driving slower are all a-holes and people that are driving faster are all idiots?

Same thing here. The marina was the idiot. But the people that buy his window tinting---- You got it.

people forget, too, that marina's have a higher cost base due to the value of the waterfront land they use, the increased insurance for being on the water, and increased enviromental (run-off) requirements. A small boat on a trailer can travel to cheaper places to get work done than a big one. That's one reason beer costs more at the dock house than at the grocery store 20 miles inland.

Wow!!! I just got my first "roasting" on iBoats! The only difference is like Charlie stated in his "roasting", I didn't realize how EDIT I was thinking wise until you brought it to my attention! Well... I didn't EDIT the guy on Craigslist considering I called 3 marinas and they were going to charge an average of $8.00 a foot. So with me selling him a 75 foot roll at $100.00 so he could potentially make money, I should have charged him  $600.00 by my calculations. How many of you actually pay $250.00 for shrink wrapping and $400.00 for winterizing? That's my point behind all this! Last year the charge for winterizing and shrink wrapping was about $500.00 and now they want  $650.00! Hell even I go through price changes once a year but I don't gouge by 30% because I didn't run my business the wrong way, made stupid investments, didn't adjust to the economy, hire when I should have scaled back, or ordered more inventory without knowing my sales capability. Everyone has there own way of doing things. That's why we were all made differently. By the way, I talked to the guy on Craigslist that I sold the shrink wrapping to. It turns out he wrapped 4 boats yesterday with the remainder of the roll and called to let me know he made an additional $500.00! So how does this go now... I thought I was getting EDIT, then I was told I EDIT someone else, then he EDIT4 other people, to a thank you from the guy that did more EDIT than myself when I was trying to accomplish something for my self. Man... what has this world come to!

I think I am just going to stick with the repair forums. I really had no intentions of *** anyone. I simply thought it was unreasonable to mark up a typical charge 30% within 12 months of a prior service (just my opinion). Second, the guy on Craigslist was just as anyone else that calls an add. I simply wanted to get rid of the roll because I was done with it and didn't want to store it. I thought I was putting a relatively fair price on an open item material based on quotes from others that had been doing this for longer than I have been boating. What he did with... I could care less. I am not quite sure why this issue has been labeled as a "con" nor at this point I do not care. I am going to walk away with after reading 32 replies to this thread that some things we say are better left unheard or unshared! I do apologize for the language I chose in the thread. I did not realize that those words were considered vulgar. You guys and gals have a good evening...
