Re: Another 18' Super Sport equals MBS
I haven't posted in a little while, so quick update:
After much hesitation, I've purchased the third SS, the 1983 model 180. This boat has many problems, unlike the 72 purchased earlier. It has been used in saltwater, so many, if not all of the rivets will have to be replaced - along with other unknowns. The heads of some of the rivets will just pop off with light force and the bilge area around the transom may need some additional metalwork.
My original plan was to use the Evinrude 115, some of the interior parts (newer style windshield, consoles, etc.) and nice galvanized trailer, junk the hull and turn the 72 into a real looker, but since the 72 has all of its hardware, I think I will restore that one back to original.
For the price I paid for the 83, I think the value has been returned, and I hope to be able to restore that hull... I like the sleekness of the 83, compared to the 72 model. The hull of the 83 appears to be a little wider and not as deep as the 72. I keep looking and trying to compare the two, but since I haven't gotten it home yet, I can't really tell.
Anyone have insight about how these two hulls compare? Scanning the specs in the brochure doesn't reveal anything obvious to me yet. The 1983 hull looks more like a pointed bow 16 SS and the 1972 appears bigger in just about every aspect to the 16.
Other news: I have trashed the interior of the 72 and started the engine for the first time (not difficult for something that hasn't been started in years).
The amount of choices I have is driving me insane, so I must choose one soon, and get it going.
Will post pics as soon as photobucket cooperates.
