Rebuilt the carb, new fuel lines, new fuel tank, new fuel line to tank, new primer bulb, new spark plugs, set timing, new impeller, blah blah...

The motor would run for a second then stop before I replaced the tank and lines. I figured it was due to the dry-rotted lines.

Now the thing wont even turn over. I have turned the slow speed needle all the way in and every conceivable 1/4 turn out. The motor is getting spark and the carb is getting gas. On the 7000th pull I look at the floor and see a small pool of black oil. The lower unit is leaking out of this little hole with every pull of the cord.

Excuse my language but what the hell do I do to get this damn thing running!

See pic.

looks like its flooding quite bad, when you redid the carb did you check to make sure the float needle was seating properly? have you checked the compression?

The needle was set properly and the float was level with the top of the bowl like the manual stated. Compression is good.

So, the fuel coming out of the lower unit is from flooding. I have been cranking on this thing for the better half of 9 hrs.

any suggestions on getting this thing running?

Crank with no choke until flooding is gone, then what?

How are you checking your spark ??

holding the plug next to the block and pulling the cord to see the spark.

so I removed the spark plugs, the choke is in, and the slow speed needle is screwed all the way in. When I pull the cord I see a mist of fuel come out of the plug holes, should I be able to see this mist?

What the hell?!!

if you are sure its has good compression, strong spark and the timing is within specs, id unhook the fuel line, open the choke , crank it a few times. then put a few drops of premix in each plug hole, wind the plugs back in and give it a try. it should sputter, backfire, snort or something. if it does make an attempt to run, do that a few times, then reconnect the fuel line, dont choke it...and try again

Holding the plug next to the block to check for spark tells you nothing. The plug fires different when under compression. What you need is a 1/4 " open air gap spark tester and then check it. I was burned on this many years ago.

got it running and enough to stop it with the kill button. Unpluged the fuel line to move it to the water barrel. Tried to start it after the line was reconnected and it backfired a couple times and nothing. When starting it cold should I pull the choke? Every time before I start it should I squeeze the bulb, cold or hot?

as boobie stated....1/4 " dry gap spark jump...consistently...before you can declare the ignition system ok...it'll be a wide and blue snap if that system is doing its job...

That's not a real good way to check the spark. It needs to jump at least a 1/4" gap on a spark tester with a healthy snap. Using the spark plug outside of the motor might mislead you into thinking it's OK when it's not.

....does the bulb pump up till hard? your fuel pump could be an issue? you can gravity feed it and see what happens.

Re: Another engine wont start thread.

pulled it this morning once and it gurgled. pulled the choke out and pulled it again, pushed the choke in and pulled and it fired right up. I ran it for 10 min or so, shut it off, pulled it again and it fired right up. I left it for an hour or so, pulled it again and it fired right up. Put it on the boat and to the ramp I go. At the ramp I pull it a few times and nothing. Pull the choke out and pull it once, then push the choke in, pull it again and nothing. I pull the plugs and they are wet with fuel. I pack up and drive home hoping the whole time that this damn thing will fall off the boat and explode like a chinese new year!
