took a day to work on my other pontoon, let the guy see the work is in progress and the quality of it, so he can have some peace of mind while waiting...so I took on what I consider the hardest part of the job, redoing the captains chair

Started by removing the vinyl and ripping key seams to get my patterns for new covers

IMG_4536.jpg

then put it back together

IMG_4537.jpg

The wrap around of the back/sides I marked with letter to make it easier to put back together, then ripped the seams and traced the patterns

then started putting them back together

So this thread is where I will post progress on this job, more to follow

Re: Another one...Upholstery

not sure what this slant 66 you speak of is...but my slant-o-matic 500A is running great...I think the problem was just a dull needle like ya said....funny how I used to break them before they ever needed to be changed, and now I never break needles, and apparently forget to replace them

Got the hardest part done...wrapping those bucket captains chairs is some tricky sewing...I think it came out OK though...

Looks great judge!
May I ask what type of foam you are using? Building some seating of my own and the price of the EZ-dri foam nearly made me soil myself.

Re: Another one...Upholstery

I am reusing the foam that original seats had, but check out wood on glasses thread, or the upholstery section of my skeeter thread and he used couch donor foam, I also used donor foam per customer request on the pontoon seats, but I will never do that again...the amount of work involved in cutting foam down to proper thickness isn't worth if they need new foam, they will need to buy new foam lol

Looks like the help is laying down on the job... Seat looks great, benches from here on should be a breeze compared to that bucket....

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Had to make flaps that cover some cubby holes and snap closed

IMG_4560.jpg

Started by cutting them to size...my width finished needed to be 6" so I cut them 8", finished length needed to be 12.5" so cut them 13.5". Then I marked them out at 1" in and 2" in.

IMG_4559.jpg

Set the seam guide on my machine at 3/4" from needle and sewed them face down, holding my edge to the 2" mark

IMG_4558.jpg

Then I set my seam guide a 1/4" and sewed the next stitch..then installed my buttons

IMG_4556.jpg

this job was actually quite time consuming, took me roughly 4 hours start to finish...of course I take a break about every 30 mins for 10 so probably about 3 hours working time

Re: Another one...Upholstery

So I took the buttoned flaps and sewed those to the front pieces, the combined the front and top pieces together

IMG_4562.jpg

giving me a finished top and front

IMG_4561.jpg

then took those and combined with a piece that ran all the way around the base by sewing it along the front then following the top and coming back down the front on the other side...giving me a perfect slip cover

IMG_4563.jpg

will cut out the access hole and drink holder after all is stapled in

Judge, what I think I like the most on your upholstry threads is the level of detail you put into explaining how you did it. It's like a 101 guide for us newbs :) Keep up the great work!

Re: Another one...Upholstery

I am just tired so short and sweet...bases...nuf said! these bases were simple, cut my vinyl 18" X 144" long and wrap around it in one piece. Did not like the old hinge system so added a 1X2 to the front edge so I could install piano hinges as well
