Re: Another one...Upholstery

So I hired this guy today, 20 year old kid..but phone interview he said all the right things and had an awesome attitude...I showed him how to measure, mark and cut pieces then went to my sewing machine and let him work alone (with the occasional ninja checks) He kept me supplied with pieces all day, and then some...cut almost 70% of the cushions while I sewed.

this is unstapled, and back rest actually connects to the top of the side support (double sided seat, backrest flips so you can sit the other direction) but it gives an idea of the layout, and his nicely done cuts (without accurate measurements things don't line up)

Second set of hands definitely helps, get the jobs done in 1/3 of the time....my goal is to train him to do it all, and eventually hire another person to keep 2 of us supplied with cuts, then we can do 2 jobs at once...tired having to turn folks away...my next 2 projects wont be posted here...1 is a racing trailer he wants to separate with a vinyl wall (curtain), and add 2 benches that fold down into beds, the other one is an OLD 1970s Land Rover reupholstery. Also have a guy lined up to get weather covers for all of his seats and console, so that he does not have to put the big cover on between each trip. do second set of hands was definitely warranted

Ok, this is getting real close to the bigs, ya hired a guy:confused:.... Man, I'd have done a 2wk internship for free (well room, board & beverages, so, no, you would not be ahead in this deal:eek:) Congrats on another couple jobs, keep up the most excellent work, and it will get pretty busy as the season winds down this fall & people spread the word about the quality of your work...

Don't forget to pencil me in for your 1st client in WV:D, seems I'll have some boats in need of vinyl..... BTW: Bonnie wants to know if you do canvas dog bed covers?

Hi Judge, I just wanted to check in now that school is over. Wow (it is really all I can say).
I am really speechless.

LOL Wood, I wish, will take a while before I have enough capitol saved up to make that purchased, but someday I will...I need it now though!

Impressive Judge, impressive!

Thanks Baja

So today we made some visible progress

Getting the back rest pulled tight and putting the "bulge" at the top was interesting, but it worked out in the end

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Judge, I gotta repeat what has been stated over and over...WOW!

You have taken to this like a duck to water...

You Sir, are a natural...Yeah, I know...there was a learning curve involved, but you make that curve look like a straight line Fastball...

Amazing and Professional don't even come close to describing the Quality work you are turning out...

I understand you are not going to post, in detail the next couple of jobs, But, PLEASE, don't leave us hanging and at least post some before and after pics...Please, pretty please...

And congrats on hiring an assistant...may your demand for jobs grow exponentially, as I am sure they will...

BTW, I took the liberty of making up a sign to hang out front...it's a bit rough around the edges...;)

Thanks GT1M, I will add a link to the photobucket pics of the next jobs, but being as the aren't boat related I didn't feel it would be the right place to post them....bad enough I derail my boat thread with boyscout stuff lol....but when I do the pontoon weather covers, I will be posting those for sure!

I'm just glad I get to say I knew you when Judge! Would you mind telling us how you did the bulge? I'm thinking somthing similar on my bench seat and would love to know how the "Pro's" do it.

Re: Another one...Upholstery

ok so here is the requested info...to do the bulge, I sewed some scrap along the seam allowance where my bulge starts, then wrapped the top cushion and stapled it inside, then added my lower cushion and finished wrapping

Nice turn around on this one Judge! Thanks for the extra info. I never thought of the extra stapling inside after wrapping the bulge but before the rest.

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Not part of this job, but do not wanna do another thread for this:

Today I turned out a quick unexpected job, guy came to me yesterday with a bunch of pieces of tarp material, asked me to sew it into a 12' X 28' tarp with D-Rings for his 25' pontoon. I tried to convince him to let me make a fitted cover, but he just wanted a rectangular tarp. Ended up with a center piece 9' X 20' then added 1.5' X 20' to both sides, then added 4' X 12' pieces to both ends...had to move into yard with sewing machine because it was so large...also weighed 40# when finished so was tricky to feed through machine
