Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

Today's 'WTH?' question:
The handle barely makes it to the 'SLOW' setting and won't rotate to the 'STOP' marking. It positively stops at the 'SLOW' position. Peering down through the carburetor throat it looks like the butterfly is fully closed when the handle indicates SLOW. It rotates fine the other way to the end of the 'FAST' range, once shifted into Fwd.
The rotation is stiff but smooth. I've cleaned up all the old grease on the throttle control shaft and linkages--but only what I could get to without taking it all apart. It didn't make any difference.
Is there another interlock I'm not aware of, or is it not supposed to rotate all the way to STOP?

did you try rotating the side knob which limits the throttle handle rotation

this used to set the low limit to keep the engine idling properly rather than dyding out at to low a RPM rate. .

when the idle is set properly just use the kill button switch to stop the engine.

How did this motor run for you last season ?-----Someone may have been adjusting that knob for no reason.

Bought this motor a week ago. Seller claimed it ran when put away 3 years ago and it does appear unmolested and in great condition.

I'll check that low speed trim but I thought it moved the linkage--not the grip position.

It is all tied together.====Post the results of a compression test.----Pull flywheel and inspect the ignition coils !-----I gave heard it many times ---" I just bought this motor "-----I always start looking for the reason it had to be sold !!----If all is well with the motor , you must install a new water pump impeller !

motors are sold for good and bad reasons.... upgrades, age,, loss of interest, granpa died.... and seized solid like mine I paid 50$ ...cdn ! with the break-in instructions still stuck on the side. after 60 + years

I'm doing lots of reading & various parts have been ordered... Others can wait till it's fired up.
The flywheel is resisting me today. I need to bring home a big bolt for my puller.

I fiddled with that low speed adjustment and that's what was preventing my grip from turning past 'SLOW'. I had no idea that adjustment had so much range that it would affect the grip position.

these harmonic pullers work pretty good.. the inverted nylon lock nuts are used as limiters so as not to screw the bolts in to far in the FW and scrape the coils. They also keep the bolts from getting lost

btw that side push cam...controlled by the side knob....don't force the throttle otherwise you can wear it down and you will need to find a new one !!

I visiteded LeeRoy's website a couple days ago (is that what you meant?). SO much useful info & tips on it! I've already made a flush adapter since you can't use muffs on this motor, and my stand is too low--and this motor too heavy-- for the barrel I've used for smaller OBs.

I only have a large wheel hub puller and the flywheel bolt diameter is only a couple inches. I found the center hub of a 3-jaw puller was just right but this is from a slide-hammer set and I can't get enough torque on the handle to push the end of the crankshaft down. Gotta stop & buy a M16x1.5 bolt to make it work.

i think the cam lobe is spring loaded removing the FW allows it to come up a bit ... not a problem

coil looks ok make certain the oiler wick is in and oiled 1-2 drops

So you're saying if the cam lobe is pushed down it will realign with the woodruff?

the slot seems widenned but if you push it down manually it should fit and line up properly ... if the slot had been damaged that is something else !

be careful not damage the rub blocks as you fit he camlobe back down .!

I use a 1/4 inch impact driver on the big bolt . the weight and inertia of the FW allows the extractor to pull up the fw without the FW rotating
