With our Carrier heat pack and AC unit.

Wiring a new digital thermostat nightmare!

The old round thermostat had a 4 wire hook up.
Yellow
White
Red
green

I followed the instructions with the new digital unit with no luck.
The display does not light up and the blower fan only works...
These instructions suck!

On the new control i have 3 connections on the top of the board,
L
C
R

Then on the center is a different connection block with
Y2
Y1
E
W2
G
O
B

on the old T-stat the red wire was jumped across R and 4..?

On the new one hooking it up by the instructions i end up with no wires to go to the L C R connection on top of the T-stat

My guess is the T stat is getting no power to the display or the compressor.
The directions say i need a 24 volt and a common on the top block with LCR, And thats what i can't figure out.

I hope i can figure this out without paying a hundred bucks or more for an AC guy to come out..

While you wait for a pro to post, here is an amateur's response.
Check whether the new stat indicates what you need for wires. I believe that you need 5 wires.
And, was the system working fine before you changed t/stat, or was there a problem that you diagnosed as a faulty t'stat?

Here is a great link for info....it should help your troubleshooting..http://highperformancehvac.com/thermostat-wiring-colors.html

Thanks,
It was working so i put the old one back on for now.

I have about 7 wires coming out of the wall but only 4 were used on the original T-stat.
The directions show that 2 wires must be used to the L C R block
one is a 24 volt and one common...
That is where my problem is..
I just need to know what wires and what will need connected on the board in the outside unit..
Man i hate to pay an AC company for something that should be simple..

,yellow wire to y term =cool ,green wire to g term = fan. white wire to w term = heat. red wire to r term = 24 volt possitive , blue wire to c term = 24 volt common,.

Re: Another question for HVAC pros

Possibly stupid question, but does it require a battery? Mine does. I also had to not just read, but carefully follow the direction it came with, as wires were jumped and hooked to seemingly random connectors (r didn't go to red, etc)

Re: Another question for HVAC pros

Gary, I do this for a living (in fact, Carrier owns our company). I hope I can help.

Yellow wire goes to Y1 (This is "cooling 1" and turns on your compressor/fan)
White wire goes to W1 (This is "heat 1" and turns on your gas or electric coils)
Red wire goes to R (24VAC hot - this is switched to either Y1 or W1 by the T'stat)
Green wire goes to G (blower start/stop)

Now, the t'stat's needs a ground wire from the transformer in the furnace. First, kill power to the unit. A multi-meter would help you in troubleshooting this.

In the furnace, (usually where the filter is) find the transformer and you'll see 4 wires going into it. High side is 120VAC and neutral. Low side is 24VAC (which is your red wire) and probably a brown wire which is the low side common. You'll need a wire from the low side common on the transformer to the t'stat's C terminal. It should go to a terminal block somewhere inside the furnace door.

Pick a spare wire to use (and be happy someone gave you spare's and you don't have to repull new wire), and attach at both ends. Turn power back on and test out.

Re: Another question for HVAC pros

Thanks so much guys! Its up and running!

The thermostat i had was some off brand and needed several wires jumpered.
I went to Home Depot and bought a Honeywell..Great directions and with the help of you guys it worked on the first try.

A big Thanks! Chillin in 70 degrees now...:D

I brought this unit back from the dead.It would barely cool the house on a 80 degree day..The blower fan hardly ran.
I replaced the blower fan, sealed and replaced all the ducts and brought it up to code.
Now with the new thermostat we should be good to go!

Gary, if the Honeywell takes batteries, and you'd like to eliminate them, run that ground wire like I described above and you won't need them. Or, maybe make it a future project if you're happy with it now.

I have twin Honeywell 8000's in my house - they're great.

Still in the 60's Bob? Man you guys need some heat and sun....:D
Mid 90's here...

Thanks Joey,
This unit is a TH4000. The AC cycles much better than the old dial thermostat.
It does take batteries but no big deal. Just happy its working...;)

18 of 30 days it had rained in June..... flash floods, soggy ground, have not seen a good weekend in almost 2 months...... it's kicking the farmer's butts between the corn getting flooded and not having the right weather for the hay season.

Here it is 7am and it has gotten warmer.... it's up to 62*........ I sure wish our week of Summer gets here soon

Gary sorry I missed ya glad things are working . Bob was right I dont get down here much I hang in restoration mostly but I will try to keep an eye down here :D. You did the right thing going back and getting the honeywell they are the best stats made and honestly if your old stat was the round Honeywell T87 that was the best stat ever made :D. I have never had to do anything to one of them but blow the dust out from time to time :D.

Bob I only have 4 boats ( there are guys with more than me here ) :D. I have actually sold 2 of them if I could just get the new owners to come pick them up and clutter their yards with them instead of mine ROFLMAO.
