sorry for bugging u guys i'm new at all this.
is the impeller housing suppose to be off center? i'm having a hell of a time changing this impeller which looks easy. i just bought my boat and it came with a impeller kit but no paper work or anything. so i don't know if i evan have the right impeller for my boat.

1989 mercruiser alpha one gen one.

Yes.

Otherwise it wouldn't work properly.

(it would still work but then it would be a centrifugal pump and wouldn't need flexible vanes.... It also wouldn't self prime as easily)

i already have the manual and everything the off center part just scared me. and it was really hard putting back together. and then once back on the boat i started it and it wined really bad so i took it all back apart. any ideas on what caused the winning?

I really don't think you would be able to hear the raw pump (if it had water going to it when spinning......you're not running it dry are you?)

My guess is that the noise is something else...

no i had water hooked up to it the night before. i had it running with water hooked to it let it get to operating temp then started to adjust the carb after it ran for about twenty min it started to get really hott so i looked at the temp gauge and it was at zero so water wasn't evan getting in there. so i shut it off. the next day i took the lower drive off. saw my impeller was bad so i put the new one on. it was not fun the i put the impeller in the housing and when i put it on the drive line thing i went down to the studs okay but was a ***** to get it on the rest of the way. i had the key lined up and everything but i finally got it, put it back on the boat. started it to make sure i was getting water which i was but then it was whinning. really bad so i took it apart to see if i messed up anything and everything looked fine.

Haha, I thought the same thing when I first took the cover off. I was pretty worried at first but then it all made sense.

Yea, make sure its getting water.

Just as a side question, what kind of lubricant is safe to put on the impeller when putting it in? I understand certain types are not good for the rubber.

i don't think wd40 was good for it after it dried up.

you can really use just about anything that won't attack the rubber.

Dishwashing soap is as good as anything......you only do it to get it installed easily...... you have to understand that whatever you do use won't be there for very long once you run the thing in the water.

I would not use a petroleum solvent....... regular motor oil would probably be ok but soap is just as good...... but nothing will be there after it runs in water for any length of time...... That's why you cannot run it dry for even just 30 seconds.

when the impeller went out i didn't have the water hose on high. and on the new impeller the water hose was on high. and it was pushing water up to the engine it was just makeing a bad winding sound. so i took it back apart. is the impeller and impeller housing that hard to put back on i really had to force mine?

also i live about an hour away from any boat dealer. what gear fluid can i run in my drive that i can just get at a auto store?

Ayuh,... Synthetic 75W-90.... I use Mobil 1...

I hear you can find the Merc oils at WallyWorld....

I have seen the Mercruiser brand oils at W-mart. I wish I knew that little bit of info when I went across town to the nearest boat dealer when I needed oil last summer. I would have never thought they would carry it.

My almart does'nt either. Do you have a farm and fleet or fleet farm near you? They carry Mercruiser.

Yeah...I looked in the Auto oil section looking for 0W-20 oil.

They have that too but not in 5qt containers.....They have all the other types of Mobil 1 synthetics in 5 qt, just not the 0W-20.

I spoke to the mgr about it and he couldn't tell me why they do or don't have anything......seems strange that the mgr can't order what people want etc...

They don't have Mobil1 gear oil either.....go figure...
