I will do my best to make a long story short! Before anything this forum has been such a great bank of knowledge - before making an account I have bookmarked a lot of helpful threads on my new journey of boat ownership.

So heres my issue, have a '58 Super Seahorse 35. When I purchased the boat/motor we had it fired up right away and it was running smoothly but it wasn't 100%. New plugs, new wires, rebuilt fuel pump. It pumped water as it should. Bought it with the carb rebuilt but i was skeptical.

Purchased a carb rebuilt kit and took her apart and found some questionable things to say the least. I need some guidence.

The more i took apart the more questions I had. I cannot find an exploded view that aligns with the carb that I have. Or im missing enough to make me a bit confused.. Packing nut does not fit - it was threaded into gaskets.. There were alot of washers, o-rings in places that didnt make sense. The carb seems very simple but I am losing confidence! I have the float/needle all set. Easy peasy. Just the needles and orientation is where im lost

Photos always help, With what I have provided does all of this look correct? Oh, boy.

Perhaps photos for reference is what im looking for?

When looking at the exploded view, (For the low and high speed needle)

Looking at #24' is that just three o-rings i need to place in there? (HN)

Then also states '24' for the LN, three o-rings? Then a washer? (LN)

Page 49 I believe.

And the packing nut for the LN I dont understand how mine doesnt fit? It almost looks like a helicoil is in there of some sort? You can kind of see it in the photo.

In the first place, it should not have o-rings, but fiber packing rings.

Ok, you are looking at a threaded bushing #85 on your diagram, on the low speed needle. It is not down in the hole where it is supposed to be. Start the needle into it a couple of turns, then pull the whole thing straight out. Now pre-assemble the packing nut, nylon washers, packings. and threaded bushing onto the needle, again only a few turns of the bushing. Now push the whole sub-assembly into the hole and lightly tighten the packing nut enough to keep the bushing from spinning.

Turn the needle in till lightly seated, then back out 1-1/2 turns. Then tighten the packing nut enough to hold everything in place against vibration.

F_R holy smokes even more gunked washers behind that bushing. Everything fits and feels much better! Love how simple these are to take apart and clean.

Hmm now I can’t get her going. Cranks and cranks - plugs are dry.

Took the carb off again to check float needle wasn’t sticking and everything looks great. I have a solid primer bulb coming off the tank. Fresh premium gas that’s mixed 24:1.. this thing is killing me.

I'll take a nibble. Check for spark to make sure the new wires are assembled correctly (continuity).

Timing fuel spark. It ran great a couple weeks ago and I haven’t touched anything with the ignition or timing.

new plugs come in tomorrow so I’m going to ground them out on the block and see if I have a healthy ark.

i will post updates first thing in the morning.

so lost why plugs were dry?

Hoping I could atleast get her to ignite after putting the carb back on but I guess not. I gave up after a fist full of the primer bulb pushed fuel out the carb.

Replace coils if coatings are cracked. Might check to be sure squeezing the primer bulb pushes fuel into the carb bowl (can hear it). If not, the fuel may not be getting past the rebuilt fuel pump.

btw -- measure spark with a tester like this (3/8" OK -- I start at 1/2" and work backwards):

I haven't heard the coils mentioned until just above. ALL, as in ALL 1958 Johnsons have bad coils unless they have already been replaced. Have you looked?

Dry plugs mean nothing. Wet plugs mean it is flooded.

Team,
Appreciate the responses and the ones taking to time to help. Always thankful of communities like this.

As of now, I fly overseas for a work project for two months so the boat will be stored till then.

What that means is I get to order new parts and have some fun when I get back. Ill order new coils, new condenser, points plate. If i had more time i would do some troubleshoot but i figured new shiny parts on this old girl might be the best thing i can do for it.

At this rate, anything else you would suggest replacing?

She's only pullstart as of right now. No wiring harness connected. I just want it simple as possible. A friend and I rigged up a proper starting circuit with a solonoid and a push button start and thats about as far as i want to go for electrical add ons. (just to save my hands from blisters from that damn pullstart)
