Good luck. The Maxxum 2700SCR is a nice and substantial boat. Remember to go very slow when backing into a slip. If you're new to boating, a lesson or two in docking from an experienced boater is well worth the time.

Thanks, I have wondered about backing into a slip! I figured I would start nose-in until I have more experience... We are getting a "lesson" from the boat shop, and it has been about 8 years since I had boat operator training from the Nat. Park Service.

Cheers!

Re: Another Try - Maxum 2700

I was just interested in how the deal went with the dealer? I used to work for a powersports dealership, we sold boats, ski's, motorcycles, new and used. Did you bargin with them enough to get to their bottom price?

From my experience dealing with used boats or bikes, the markup is generally pretty big. The boat is usually taken in on trade, and the dealership normally steals it from the original party. We had ALOT more wiggle room dealing with something used than new. I always new when a customer came in and was "Fishing" or if he was serious. How? If they threw out some lowball offer, I stick out my hand and ask for their credit card and watch em crap their pants.:D

Can't tell you how many used bikes I saw get sold where the dealer made a couple G's on the deal. But on the flip side I've sold many bikes where we made a couple hundred dollars, because we were dealing with a smart customer.

I realize you are done with your boat search, congrats! But for those of you still looking, don't be afraid of a dealer...Go in there, be ready to deal, whip out a credit card to show them you are serious, bargin hard and be happy, or walk out.

Most dealerships DO NOT like to see people walk out when they know you were willing to buy. Especially in this type of economy. A general rule is that if you make an offer, and they come back out, hand you your credit card and send you on your way, you weren't even close to where they were willing to deal. If they take forever in the "Room" and come back out with another offer..you are "probably" going to get what you want, and they are trying to get a "bump" out of you. Tell them that you've made your offer, and thats it and get up to leave. If they try and stop you, your probably in..if they don't, tell them you'll think about they're counter offer and get back to them. Unless you are fine with their offer of course. At least at that point you'll know you are at their bottom.

Bottom line, don't be afraid to lowball a dealer..just be prepared to deal if you do. Also, DO NOT let them run your credit before you get the deal you want if you are planning on financing. Tell them you are going to use your own financing and have already been approved. If they run your credit, they can find out how much money you have available to you before they even come back out with a price..from there they can do all sorts of things, like trying to sell you "back end", meaning warranties, service contracts ect. They'll try and hide the price with some super low payment. Some will even lie to you and tell you, you can only get a low finance percent if you buy a warranty or service contract. DO NOT believe them. Buy what you want, but don't let them push you into buying it. Regarless of what you are approved for or the payments they are giving you..REMEMBER THE BOTTOM LINE PRICE!

Just my 2 cents. Take it for what its worth.

Re: Another Try - Maxum 2700

I really liked the people I met at this dealer. My sales person was especially kind, even giving me the keys to the place so I could go in after hours and show my wife the boat. Let's see how things go with the service and detail I ordered.

I got the Maxum for $24,500. The boat was a repo and I ended up dealing with the bank holding the title. It seems like the dealer received a set fee on the deal, but who knows.

The dealer claims there was a lot of interest in the boat and originally he thought the bank would not go a penny less than $26k. So, I was very pleased - UNTIL I realized I would need to pay sales tax!!! For private party sales, there is NO sales tax in Nevada. This goes for cars, motorcycles, boats, etc, and is GREAT! However, if you buy from a dealer you must pay sales tax. I tried to find creative ways around it, but in the end I had to pay the 7+ % interest

So, I am waiting for the title and having them prep the boat before I slip it at Lake Mead. My family and I are very excited.

Thanks again.

Yeah, you're gonna want to back in, for ease of boarding, tying off, and leaving etc.

I figured I would start nose-in
That would be bow-in Skipper . . . ;) :p :)

I think you should literally go down to the Marina (which one?) as often as possible, putter around the slips, take her outside just to get her all worked up, then come back in and back into the slip over and over. Different days, and particularly different seasons, the wind will change. What works one day may not another. Generally wind out of the North in the Winter and out of the South during the Summer . . . There will be days where the wind will gently settle you right where you want to go and you'll think "hey, I am one bad arse mo fo!" And then the next day you'll need 10 attempts to get her in. Be patient, use the wind when you can, use power to kick the wind's butt when you have to, and don't be afraid to abort mission!!!!! Starting over is OK.

A little tip, when you head in to your "finger" in the marina and go to the opposite side of your slip to get her turned and ready to back in. Just sit there for a minute or so and see what the wind is doing right then. There will be days where you can't do this because by the time you get her whoaed up the wind will have you into something as soon as you get off the power, but when you can, take a minute. Aslo when you are coming into the Marina look at any wind references you can find. Direction and strength. Since you will be coming into the same Marina over and over, you will learn what works when . . . Good luck. Take it slow GET A BOAT HOOK. Maybe 2 ;)
